About The Position

The Medical Assistant Extern will shadow the preceptor when performing various administrative and clinical tasks, with permission from the patient. This role involves assisting with patient flow, performing clerical duties, restocking supplies, and learning about quality control documentation. The extern will also gain experience in taking vital signs, performing EKGs, measuring height and weight, conducting point-of-care rapid testing, and performing urinalysis, urine culture, and pregnancy testing. This externship provides an opportunity to learn about patient/staff experience initiatives and infection control within a physician-led, patient-centric network committed to simplifying healthcare.

Requirements

Must be a Medical Assistant extern.
Must obtain permission from the patient to shadow.
Must be able to perform clerical tasks.
Must be able to handle medical equipment.
Must be able to take vital signs.
Must be able to perform EKGs.
Must be able to measure height and weight.
Must be able to perform point of care rapid testing.
Must be able to perform urinalysis, urine culture, and pregnancy testing.

Responsibilities

Shadow preceptor in performing administrative tasks such as patient flow, greeting and escorting patients, answering phones, proper disposal of HPI, restocking supplies, and proper handling of medical equipment.
Shadow preceptor in performing clinical tasks including quality control documentation, taking vital signs, performing EKGs, measuring height and weight, performing/observing point or care rapid testing, and performing urinalysis, urine culture, and pregnancy testing.
Assist with patient flow.
Greet and escort patients throughout the facility with patient’s permission.
Perform clerical tasks such as answering phones, burning CD’s, and proper disposal of HPI.
Restock supplies.
Properly handle medical equipment.
Learn Quality Control documentation.
Practice Patient/Staff Experience initiatives.
Learn about Infection Control.
