Medical Assistant Extern Clinics
About The Position
The Medical Assistant Extern Clinics position is a temporary learning opportunity for students currently enrolled in a Medical Assisting program. Appointments last no more than six months and are designed to help students develop skills and build clinical competency. The role is based on-site in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area, and employees must reside in Oregon or Washington. The extern is supervised at all times by a Lead Medical Assistant, MA preceptor, or designee. Legacy Medical Group uses a “married state” preceptor/preceptee model. The extern assists with patient care, helps maintain department and clinic efficiency, and performs other appropriate duties as assigned. As a member of the health care team, the extern works in cooperation with and under the direction of a physician, while participating in daily clinic operations under a supervisor or manager.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Medical Assisting program.
- Current American Heart Association BLS CPR certification.
- Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
- Must reside in Oregon or Washington state.

Responsibilities
- Prepare patients and rooms for examinations and procedures.
- Perform basic laboratory testing, point-of-care testing, phlebotomy, and other quality controls under supervision.
- Administer medications under direct supervision as directed by a physician or nurse practitioner.
- Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with examinations and procedures.
- Perform procedures under supervision until full competency has been documented by a Lead Medical Assistant, preceptor, or designee.
- Accurately document medical information in patient records.
- Track and route test results to physicians or nurse practitioners for review, and file results in medical records according to site practices.
- Communicate test results to patients when deemed appropriate by a physician or nurse practitioner.
- Facilitate patient care activities, including scheduling ancillary tests and reinforcing patient education, with direct supervision as appropriate and as directed by a physician or nurse practitioner.
- Maintain adequate inventory of medical, office, and pharmaceutical supplies.
- Demonstrate and maintain professional behavior in accordance with established standards.
- Use the telephone in a timely, concise, and appropriate manner to meet the needs of internal and external customers.
- Perform basic computer tasks and use the electronic health record proficiently for daily documentation and patient-care communications.
- Process orders appropriately and accurately without signing or otherwise authorizing them.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
