About The Position

The Medical Assistant/Cast Specialist will escort patients to x-ray and exam rooms, monitor patient flow, and assist physicians with minor clinical procedures. This role involves casting and splinting removal and application, supply utilization tracking and ordering, and stocking exam rooms. The specialist will also schedule diagnostic tests, review and code charge slips, submit insurance claims, and return patient phone calls. Additionally, the position performs various office and clerical duties and must be able to work with any physician in the Orthopaedic Clinic. The role also includes scheduling patient appointments, obtaining authorizations, maintaining physician calendars, performing vitals, coding charge slips, covering the front desk, implementing physician orders, submitting workers compensation and HMO requests, and checking supply expiration dates.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent
  • At least 6 months casting experience in an acute care setting
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) (If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date)
  • Orthopaedic Technologist Certified (OTC) (Must have one of the following: Registered Orthopaedic Technologist (ROT) from ASOP, Registered Orthopaedic Technologist (ROT) from NBCOS, or Orthopaedic Technologist Certification (OTC) from NBCOT. If no certificate upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date.)

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Orthopaedic Program
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma program
  • Preferably a year of experience as a medical assistant in an acute care setting
  • Spanish language skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Familiarity with word processing, IDX, AS400 and scheduling software

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to x-ray and exam rooms
  • Monitor patient flow
  • Assist physicians with minor clinical procedures (staple removal, suture removal, wound care)
  • Perform casting and splinting removal and application as directed by the physician
  • Track supply utilization and order new supplies
  • Stock exam rooms and work stations
  • Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by the physician
  • Review and code charge slips
  • Submit insurance claims
  • Return patient phone calls
  • Perform various office and clerical duties
  • Schedule patient appointments
  • Obtain authorizations and pre-authorizations for patient care services
  • Schedule appointments with ancillary departments or other care providers
  • Maintain master calendar for physician(s)
  • Perform vitals and enter required information in Cerner
  • Develop supporting documentation for insurance claims
  • Cover front desk when needed
  • Ensure physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented
  • Submit workers compensation and HMO requests
  • Relay disability status to adjusters and nurse case managers
  • Check supplies and medications for expiration dates and dispose of them according to standards
