About The Position

This full-time, non-exempt position at the BCO Ortho Clinic in Manhattan Beach involves escorting patients, monitoring patient flow, and assisting physicians with minor clinical procedures. Key responsibilities include staple and suture removal, wound care, and the application and removal of casts and splints under physician direction. The role also entails tracking and ordering supplies, stocking exam rooms and workstations, scheduling diagnostic tests, reviewing and coding charge slips, submitting insurance claims, and returning patient phone calls. The Medical Assistant/Cast Specialist will perform various office and clerical duties and must be able to work with any physician in the clinic. Essential duties include scheduling appointments, obtaining authorizations, maintaining physician calendars, performing patient vitals, and ensuring physician orders are implemented. The position also involves submitting workers compensation and HMO requests, relaying disability status, and checking supplies and medications for expiration dates.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent.
  • At least 6 months casting experience in an acute care setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) - must be obtained within 30 days of hire if no card upon hire.
  • Must have one of the following certifications: Registered Orthopaedic Technologist (ROT) from American Society of Orthopedic Professional (ASOP), Registered Orthopaedic Technologist (ROT) from National Board for Certification in the Orthopedic Specialties (NBCOS), or Orthopaedic Technologist Certification (OTC) from the National Board for Certification of Orthopaedic Technologists (NBCOT). If no certificate upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate from an accredited school of Orthopaedic Program.
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant Certificate/Diploma program.
  • Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience (Preferably a year of experience as a medical assistant in an acute care setting).
  • Spanish language skills.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Familiarity with word processing, IDX, AS400 and scheduling software.

Responsibilities

  • Escort patients to x-ray and exam rooms.
  • Monitor patient flow.
  • Assist physicians with minor clinical procedures including staple removal, suture removal, and wound care.
  • Perform casting and splinting removal and application as directed by the physician.
  • Track supply utilization and order new supplies.
  • Stock exam rooms and work stations.
  • Schedule diagnostic tests ordered by the physician.
  • Review and code charge slips.
  • Submit insurance claims.
  • Return patient phone calls.
  • Perform various office and clerical duties.
  • Schedule patient appointments.
  • Obtain authorizations and pre-authorizations for patient care services.
  • Schedule appointments with ancillary departments or other care providers.
  • Maintain master calendar for physician(s).
  • Perform vitals and enter required information in Cerner.
  • Develop supporting documentation for insurance claims and submit claims.
  • Cover front desk when needed for breaks, lunches, call outs, vacations.
  • Ensure that physician orders for medications and treatments are implemented by the appropriate staff.
  • Submit all workers compensation and HMO requests.
  • Relay disability status to adjusters and nurse case managers.
  • Check supplies and medications for expiration dates and dispose of them according to hospital and Joint Commission standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.
