About The Position

The Medical Assistant Apprentice works under the direction of a Medical Assistant mentor for on-the-job training to provide basic clinical, clerical, and technical support to assist providers in planning for patients’ care, comfort, and safety. The apprentice performs in a manner consistent with the health system's mission, policies, and initiatives while maintaining patient confidentiality at all times. The Medical Assistant Ambulatory (MA) functions within the administration pre-defined scope of practice guidelines per state location of practice. The Medical Assistant Apprentice focuses on developing clinical and administrative proficiency through mentorship and active learning. The MA in the ambulatory care setting collects subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicates this data to the health care provider. This role participates in the care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals and following through on the patient's plan of care under the direction of the provider. The MA communicates the provider's written instructions for care to the patient or caregiver by transmitting specifically defined information. The position will participate in care for patients, across the lifespan, in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patients move in and out of care settings, performing a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment (Medical Assistant Apprentice)
  • Re-certification as required (Medical Assistant Apprentice)
  • Graduate of a Medical Assistant program (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified - one of three options)
  • Documented successful completion of Medical Terminology from an accredited institution or completed online through Universal Class (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified - one of three options)
  • Documented successful completion of Anatomy & Physiology or Body Structure & Function or Human Body in Health & Disease from an accredited institution or completed online through Universal Class (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified - one of three options)
  • Documented successful completion of Pharmacology from an accredited institution (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified - one of three options)
  • Two years of Medical Assistant-related work experience AND completion of the required educational courses listed above within the first 12 months from hire (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified - one of three options)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified)
  • Re-certification as required (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified)
  • Must be a graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)
  • Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)
  • Certification (CMA) obtained through a nationally approved certification program for medical assistant, including but not limited to: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Clinical Medical Assistant Certification (CMAC) through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), or National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), etc. (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)
  • Registration (RMA) obtained through the American Medical Technologists (AMT) also acceptable (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)
  • North Dakota (ND) registration as an MAIII through the ND Board of Nursing (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, if applicable)
  • If incumbent does not already hold their registration as an MAIII through the ND Board of Nursing at time of hire they will be granted 4 months to obtain registration (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, if applicable)
  • All medication administration performed by the incumbent prior to obtaining the MAIII must be supervised by a licensed nurse (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, if applicable)
  • Must also be registered on the ND Board of Nursing UAP Registry if they do not possess MAIII registration at time of hire (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, if applicable)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)
  • Re-certification as required (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Medical Terminology course (Medical Assistant Apprentice)
  • Graduate of a vocational technical Health Unit Coordinator Program, Medical Office Specialist, or Medical Secretary (Medical Assistant Apprentice)
  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred (Medical Assistant Apprentice)
  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred (Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified)
  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred (Medical Assistant Ambulatory)

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic clinical, clerical, and technical support to assist providers in planning for patients’ care, comfort, and safety

  • Prepare exam rooms
  • Ready instruments
  • Assist providers with various procedures and tests within their scope of practice
  • Accurate documentation of patient data
  • Process orders and prescriptions
  • Facilitate professional communication between patients and medical staff
  • Manage administrative tasks such as scheduling, billing, and using computer applications
  • Maintain regular attendance and meet ongoing competency standards to ensure high-quality patient care
  • Collect subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicate this data to the health care provider
  • Participate in the care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals
  • Follow through on the patient's plan of care under the direction of the provider
  • Communicate the provider's written instructions for care to the patient, or caregiver, by transmission of specifically defined information
  • Participate in care for patients, across the lifespan, in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patients move in and out of care settings
  • Perform a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine
