About The Position

The Medical Assistant (MA) in the ambulatory care setting collects subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicates this data to the health care provider. This role participates in the care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals and following through on the patient's plan of care under the direction of the provider. The MA communicates the provider's written instructions for care to the patient or caregiver and participates in care for patients across the lifespan in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up. A variety of specialized clinical duties are performed under the direct supervision of a licensed medical professional.

Requirements

  • For Medical Assistant Ambulatory, Non-Certified: Graduate of a Medical Assistant program, OR Documented successful completion of Medical Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology (or equivalent), and Pharmacology courses from an accredited institution or online through Universal Class, OR Two years of Medical Assistant-related work experience and completion of the required educational courses listed above within the first 12 months from hire
  • For Medical Assistant Ambulatory (Certified/Registered): Must be a graduate of a recognized Medical Assistant program
  • For Medical Assistant Ambulatory (Certified/Registered): Nationally certified or registered as a Medical Assistant (MA) through a nationally approved certification program (e.g., AAMA, NHA, AMCA, NCCT) or registration (e.g., AMT)
  • For Medical Assistant Ambulatory (Certified/Registered) in North Dakota: Registration as an MAIII through the ND Board of Nursing (to be obtained within 4 months of hire if not already held)
  • For Medical Assistant Ambulatory (Certified/Registered) in North Dakota: Registration on the ND Board of Nursing UAP Registry if MAIII registration is not possessed at time of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within six months of employment (re-certification as required)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Collect subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicate this data to the health care provider
  • Participate in the care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals
  • Follow through on the patient's plan of care under the direction of the provider
  • Communicate the provider's written instructions for care to the patient or caregiver by transmission of specifically defined information
  • Participate in care for patients, across the lifespan, in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, treatment, and follow-up as patients move in and out of care settings
  • Perform a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine
  • Obtain vital signs
  • Prepare patients for examinations
  • Observe and report patient's signs or symptoms
  • Perform point of care testing
