About The Position

This position is for the Same Day Clinic and offers three potential roles: Medical Assistant (1.0 FTE), Ambulatory EMT (1.0 FTE), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) (0.9 FTE). The clinic operates Monday through Friday with day shifts of 8 hours each, totaling 80 hours per pay period. The location is in-person. For the Medical Assistant role, responsibilities include contributing to patient and family-centered care under the direction of physicians or clinical care team members, performing clinical tasks, assisting with examinations and procedures, collecting specimens, performing basic patient care, and other delegated duties. The Ambulatory EMT role involves performing a variety of medical and clinic support functions, assisting with direct and indirect patient care, and executing routine medical procedures within an ambulatory setting. This includes direct patient care tasks such as providing care appropriate to patient age and condition, obtaining vital signs, performing screenings, preparing patients for exams, administering immunizations and medications, collecting specimens, assisting with procedures, using universal precautions, documenting care in the EHR, and activating emergency response when needed. Indirect patient care tasks include promoting patient welfare, maintaining supplies, ensuring a clean environment, maintaining equipment, performing registration and scheduling tasks, and participating in department meetings and education. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) role, within the Hennepin County Medical Center Relationship-Based Care Practice Model, assists providers in patient care delivery and performs nursing functions within the LPN scope of practice. Responsibilities include administering medications and immunizations, contributing to patient assessments, obtaining patient history, performing basic patient care, providing patient education from standardized plans, transcribing orders, and managing telephone communication.

Requirements

Diploma or Associate’s Degree from an accredited Medical Assistant school (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) that includes a clinical externship or a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, as evidenced through educational transcripts (Medical Assistant)
Successful completion of an approved training program for EMT (Ambulatory EMT)
Ability to perform specialized clinical tasks and procedures in alignment with HHS standards
Knowledge of medical terminology
Ability to effectively interview patients and collect information required to obtain medical history and to accurately register and/or schedule patients
Ability to work cohesively and respectfully with a diverse work force and patient population
Ability to prioritize, organize, and communicate with multidisciplinary staff
Basic computer knowledge
Ability to read and follow written instructions; understand and communicate verbal and written information
Ability to perform job duties that meet departmental performance expectations as well as HHS standards related to quality, accuracy, productivity, patient and family centered care, customer service, etc
Completion of an approved course in practical nursing (LPN)
Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Minnesota Board of Nursing (LPN)
Current CPR certification (LPN)
Must possess basic nursing skills and deliver safe patient care (LPN)
Attention to detail and ability to problem solve are essential (LPN)
Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills (LPN)

Nice To Haves

Experience with EPIC and/or similar electronic health record (Medical Assistant, Ambulatory EMT)
Proficient with Microsoft Office Software (Medical Assistant, Ambulatory EMT)
6 months related experience or HHS externship (Medical Assistant, Ambulatory EMT)
Possesses active certification by the AAMA, AMT, or NHA at time of hire (Medical Assistant)

Certification by the State of Minnesota as an EMT (Ambulatory EMT)

Responsibilities

Perform assigned clinical tasks under the direction of a physician or other providers including: administer medications, injections, and immunizations, spirometry, tympanometry, apply minor dressings and splints, connect patients to portable monitors e.g. pulse oximetry, nebulization, glucose monitoring, and urethral catheterization and other clinical duties as delegated within the Medical Assistant scope of practice
Set up for and provide direct assistance to physicians and other licensed care providers with medical examinations and procedures including: colposcopy, flex sigmoidoscopy, minor surgery
Perform specimen collection including: blood draws, sputum samples and urine samples
Perform hearing and vision screens and developmental testing
Review patient information as required by the rooming process and competently enter information into the patient medical record
Perform basic patient care activities including: place patients in rooms, take and chart vital signs
Performs other duties as assigned (Medical Assistant)
Performs direct patient care tasks after training and competency validation are complete. Direct patient care tasks include but are not limited to the following: Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population
Obtains and documents patient’s reason for visit, vital signs including height and weight, patient screening questions, review allergies, and review medications (Ambulatory EMT)
Performs a variety of screening related to patient care including but not limited to vision, hearing, developmental, and pain and records information in to the patient’s medical record (Ambulatory EMT)
Sets up and prepares patient for examination and/or procedure along with providing direct assistance to LIP (Ambulatory EMT)
Administers immunizations and medications within scope and under orders and direction from an LIP (Ambulatory EMT)
Collects, labels and processes specimens (e.g. phlebotomy, urinalysis, swabs) using appropriate technique recording information into the patient’s medical record as indicated (Ambulatory EMT)
Assists nurse or LIP with procedures including those requiring sterile and clean technique (Ambulatory EMT)
Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed (Ambulatory EMT)
Documents and reports patient observations, care and outcomes of interventions in the electronic health record (EHR) (Ambulatory EMT)
Follows appropriate documentation procedure on paper for approved department specific procedures (Ambulatory EMT)
Engages and facilitate with other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs (Ambulatory EMT)
Activates emergency response and/or initiates Basic Life Support when appropriate (Ambulatory EMT)
Provides standardized instruction based on written materials. Refer patients that require further teaching to a nurse or LIP (Ambulatory EMT)
Indirect patient care/clinic tasks include but are not limited to the following: Promotes patient welfare and independence by communicating through words and actions and understanding of patients’ reactions to the healthcare environment (Ambulatory EMT)
Maintains stock of medications and immunizations as assigned (Ambulatory EMT)
Maintains a clean, functional environment including cleaning and disinfecting of equipment and exam rooms (Ambulatory EMT)
Ensures equipment is operable and follows established procedures to remove equipment out of service for inspection (Ambulatory EMT)
Completes the pre-cleaning of scopes and instruments as applicable to department (Ambulatory EMT)
Performs and records calibration/monitoring requirements as assigned (Ambulatory EMT)
Stocks rooms according to written standard work. Procures equipment and supplies as indicated for the department (Ambulatory EMT)
Performs limited registration and scheduling tasks in clinics and/or contact Connection Center to do phone registration and scheduling (Ambulatory EMT)
