About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Director of Programs, the Media Teaching Artist role is responsible for co-leading project-based film production courses for youth ages 11 - 18 in Fall 2026. We’re seeking a creative, consistent, and resourceful media producer and educator. BAYCAT empowers 200+ young creators yearly, guiding them through the media-making process. They collaborate with 250+ partners, bridging the digital divide for 4,700+ youths over 17 years. They provide paid media arts training for young people while creating stories that progress social justice. The Media Teaching Artist will provide mentorship in media production in the afterschool youth program; curriculum development & ideation; and youth project management, collaboration, & team building. All team members are expected to understand and embrace the mission statement, in particular how it is reflected in the commitment to respect and represent diverse ideas, races, genders, sexualities, abilities, cultures, religions, and traditions. Team members are to work in a manner that is consistent with this commitment and work to interrupt behaviors that hinder diversity and inclusion efforts.

Requirements

1-3 years of facilitation and/or teaching experience in youth-based settings (ie, educator, afterschool, teaching artist).
Experience with and/or interest in learning how to create inclusive learning environments for youth with disabilities and social emotional support needs.
Media/film production experience and handling of basic equipment.
Is detail-oriented and a strong project manager.
Would have a creative approach to teaching and a warm, patient demeanor.
Is knowledgeable of current trends in media production; the demands of the professional field; and the tools, technologies, and resources inherent to the discipline.
Passion for using media as a tool to create positive community impact.
Is a fierce team player.

Nice To Haves

Experience using Adobe Premiere Pro a plus.

Responsibilities

Lead instruction of two media production courses, one intro and one advanced, using existing BAYCAT curriculum.
Design project-based learning timelines and manage youth progress through benchmarks.
Act as a mentor to middle school and high school aged youth and support training efforts.
Build trust and a culture of accountability and model emotionally intelligent communication.
Collaborate closely with the Acadio team to provide an interactive and collaborative learning environment.
Model and support BAYCAT’s mission and values.
Ensure that all youth projects are properly realized from conception to completion, in a timely fashion for sharing with the BAYCAT community by the end of the term.
Manage class timelines using master planning calendar template, on BAYCAT’s Google calendar, and using Google Drive and other tools and keep the whole team up to date with all projects’ status and development progress.
Engage in youth orientation, family communications, and group project support.
Respond to parent and caregiver emails and phone calls promptly, warmly and professionally.
Act as “executive” producer and client liaison (when applicable) when on production.
Participate in group feedback sessions and provide feedback that is appropriate for youth based on their social-emotional and artistic development and learning styles and that aligns with clients' needs and BAYCAT's values of compassion and equity.
Build and maintain good relationships with clients, partners (funders, guest speakers), community members, and interns.
Help create and document learning activities and share on social media.
Integrate existing media production curriculum into daily planning and instruction.
Instruct and guide youth through the complete production process (pre-production, production, post-production).
Attend meetings and meet lesson preparation deadlines in advance of instructional days.
Stay current in regards to creative ideas to keep the media production processes fresh and engaging for youth.
Demonstrate and report on deliverables and outcomes with support from the Associate Director of Programs and Development Team.
Collaborate closely with filmmaking mentors for possible crossover between projects, use of equipment, and scheduling.
Collaborate with BAYCAT team members to continue to ensure the curriculum and learning environment aligns with anti-racist and neuro affirming BAYCAT culture and practices.
Reflect and engage in your own anti-racist journey and professional development individually and with the team.
Engage and participate in BAYCAT team building activities, which may include team meetings, retreats, and other organizational gatherings, when schedule allows.
