About The Position

Responsible for performing and reporting assigned laboratory tests to provide diagnostic data for the treatment and/or diagnosis of disease. The employee must be competent in more than one discipline of the laboratory/section. This role requires certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician from an authorized agency with 3 years of experience. The employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from a NACCLS approved program or equivalent.
  • MLT (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • TN State License
  • Must obtain State of TN license within six months of hire date.
  • Maintain State of TN licensure by completing continuing education as required by State of not less than 12 CE hours annually.
  • Three years of experience, one at JMCGH.
  • Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures normally acquired by 3 months to one year of on the job training and orientation.
  • Demonstrated competence in more than one discipline of the department in lab.
  • Routine performance of additional duties above and beyond standard job assignment.
  • Communication and verbal skills to schedule procedures, report results, and obtain patient information with nursing personnel on a frequent basis and with physicians and office staff on an occasional basis.
  • Interpersonal skills with patients to perform special tests in the Laboratory on an occasional basis.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and special laboratory tests in designated areas of the laboratory.
  • Demonstrates competence in all areas of assigned cost center plus in-depth knowledge and demonstrated competence in a discipline within their cost center.
  • Evaluates and reports test results as instructed by test procedure or section procedure including critical value reporting.
  • Performs reagent and instrument quality control and records results, and reports problems to supervisory personnel as instructed in procedures and assists in resolving them.
  • Performs and maintains records of preventive maintenance on assigned instruments.
  • Inventories, receives and stores supplies for assigned areas and prepares reagents as needed.
  • Obtains specimens from patients for laboratory procedures.
  • RCRA Hazardous Waste Management for Generators Certification will be provided to staff assigned to handle hazardous waste (alcohols, xylene, and stain) to the hazardous waste drum collection area on the dock.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
