Mechatronics Engineer - Closures

Zoox•Foster City, CA
•$151,000 - $182,000

About The Position

Zoox is developing fully autonomous vehicles and the supporting ecosystem required to bring the technology to market at scale. The Closures team designs, develops, and innovates automated closure systems for its autonomous vehicle. The Mechatronics Engineer owns electromechanical hardware that enables closures to move, including latches, actuators, motors, and sensing. The role improves systems in the production fleet and serves as the responsible engineer for that hardware on new vehicle programs. The engineer owns new-program closures hardware from requirements and concept through supplier development, validation, and launch. They analyze fleet data and returned hardware using Python or MATLAB to identify, prioritize, and root-cause issues in service, then coordinate corrective action with firmware, controls, manufacturing, and supplier partners. They also define actuation behavior with firmware partners and model system dynamics to establish component and mechanism requirements, while building benches, fixtures, and test automation for verification.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience.
  • Experience developing electromechanical hardware such as latches, actuators, or other motor-driven mechanisms, including working with technical suppliers.
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for data analysis, visualization, and system modeling.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software; CATIA 3DEXPERIENCE is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Design for Manufacturability, including GD&T and dimensional engineering.
  • Comfort debugging across mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong interest in multidisciplinary engineering, ideally demonstrated through personal hobbies or projects.
  • Experience with automotive closures such as doors, liftgates, trunks, drop glass, or charge port mechanisms.
  • Experience with closed-loop control systems, Simulink, or similar modeling software.
  • Experience taking hardware from prototype through production, including launch support.
  • Solid electronics fundamentals and embedded experience, including ECUs, C/C++, or PCB layout.
  • Comfort debugging hardware interfaces such as Ethernet, CAN, UART, LIN, I2C, or SPI.
  • Experience using vehicle fleet data, logs, or telemetry to prioritize issues and determine root causes.
  • Familiarity with 8D, DFMEA, PFMEA, and formal problem-solving methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Own closures electromechanical hardware on new programs from requirements and concept through supplier development, validation, and launch.
  • Analyze fleet data and returned hardware with Python or MATLAB to identify and prioritize issues on vehicles in service, determine root causes, and drive corrective action with firmware, controls, manufacturing, and supplier partners.
  • Define and improve actuation behavior with firmware partners, including control strategy, detection and fault handling, and mechanism durability.
  • Model system dynamics to set requirements for motor and actuator selection, gear train sizing, duty cycle, and load cases.
  • Build benches, fixtures, and test automation to verify system requirements.

Benefits

  • Paid time off, including sick leave, vacation, and bereavement.
  • Unpaid time off.
  • Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights.
  • Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
  • Health insurance.
  • Long-term care insurance.
  • Long-term and short-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package.
