Mechatronics Controls Engineer

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

Apple’s R&D group is seeking an engineer to develop, prototype, and validate complex next-generation systems. The role involves building capabilities to assess the performance of system prototypes and sub-components, and developing novel methods, instrumentation, and testing software for mechanisms, sensors, and electronics. The engineer will work with robotics and control algorithm developers, mechanical engineers, and power electronics teams to prototype, test, and validate custom control systems for unique applications.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in Engineering plus 3+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong knowledge in classical and modern control theory, robotics, and digital signal processing.
  • Deep domain expertise in sensor integration and characterization, with an emphasis on IMUs.
  • Experience in hardware/software integration, bring-up, and physical system debugging.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience with modern software development workflows, version control (e.g., Git), and generative AI developer productivity tools (e.g., Claude).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with rapid prototyping using off-the-shelf sensors and MCUs.
  • Experience with embedded systems testing, analysis, and bring-up.
  • Strong background in experimental data analysis, system telemetry, and physical system introspection.
  • Background in Field Oriented Control (FOC) for motor drives and actuators.
  • Familiarity with hardware communication buses and protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, UART, SPI, I2C, BiSS).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, prototype, and validate complex next-generation systems.
  • Build capabilities to assess the performance of system prototypes and sub-components.
  • Develop novel methods, instrumentation, and testing software across mechanisms, sensors, and electronics.
  • Partner with robotics and control algorithm developers, mechanical engineers, and power electronics teams to prototype, test, and validate custom control systems.
