Mechatronics Controls Engineer

Apple•Sunnyvale, CA

About The Position

Apple’s R&D group is seeking a Robotics Controls Engineer to develop, prototype, and validate complex next-generation systems. The role involves building capabilities to assess the performance of system prototypes and sub-components by developing novel methods, instrumentation, and testing software across mechanisms, sensors, and electronics. The engineer will partner with robotics and control algorithm developers, mechanical engineers, and power electronics teams to prototype, test, and validate custom control systems for unique applications.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in Engineering.
  • At least 3 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Strong knowledge of classical and modern control theory, robotics, and digital signal processing.
  • Deep expertise in sensor integration and characterization, with an emphasis on IMUs.
  • Experience with hardware/software integration, bring-up, and physical system debugging.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ and Python or MATLAB.
  • Experience with modern software development workflows, version control (e.g., Git), and generative AI developer productivity tools (e.g., Claude).
  • Experience with rapid prototyping using off-the-shelf sensors and MCUs.
  • Experience with embedded systems testing, analysis, and bring-up.
  • Strong background in experimental data analysis, system telemetry, and physical system introspection.
  • Background in Field Oriented Control (FOC) for motor drives and actuators.
  • Familiarity with hardware communication buses and protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, UART, SPI, I2C, and BiSS.

Responsibilities

  • Prototype, bring up, debug, and characterize novel control techniques on physical hardware.
  • Rapidly integrate, tune, calibrate, and test complex robotic prototypes.
  • Drive root-cause failure analysis and cross-functional problem solving.
  • Communicate technical progress and data-driven insights through documentation and presentations.
