About The Position

This is a full-time, regular position working 40 hours per week, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The base pay for this position is $27.60 per hour. The work is primarily non-routine due to service calls and a variety of assigned projects. The role involves performing skilled work in assigned department operations and maintenance, including inspecting, installing, and troubleshooting electrical/HVAC and related systems. Responsibilities include monitoring and troubleshooting systems, processing work orders, maintaining and repairing equipment, and keeping operational records. The position also involves installing, maintaining, and repairing heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and steam distribution equipment to optimize energy use. The Mechanical Specialist will operate various equipment, including hand tools, laptop computers, and diagnostic hardware, and will install, maintain, and repair computerized electronic pneumatic and digital direct control devices related to HVAC and heat control. They will also operate measuring, diagnostic, and testing instruments, requisition materials, discuss needs with vendors, and recommend purchases. Reading complex blueprints, piping, sketches, schematics, and wiring diagrams is required, as is maintaining electronic/pneumatic testing equipment. Brazing, soldering, pipefitting, welding, and fabrication are also part of the duties, along with maintaining the underground steam distribution system.

Requirements

  • Five years’ relevant HVAC experience, in addition to a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Maine Divers license.
  • Hands on mechanical, planning, forecasting, communication, and judgement skills.
  • Knowledge of compliance and regulation standards.
  • Independent judgment along with effective communication and interpersonal skills are a must to work with both internal and external constituents.

  • Heavy work: The ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Lifting and exerting forces more than 50 pounds requires assistance by other employee(s) or mechanical assistance. Individual forces must never exceed 50 pounds.
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, and extreme temperatures.

Nice To Haves

  • Single or a combination of licensing in mechanical, plumbing, and electrical trades preferred. (examples are journeyman’s in plumbing and electrical, certifications in refrigeration and natural gas propane)

Responsibilities

  • Performs skilled work in assigned department operations and maintenance, which includes inspecting, installing, and troubleshooting electrical/HVAC, and/or related systems.

  • Maintains and repairs assigned equipment as needed; performs ongoing maintenance checks to determine need and ensure operational safety.

  • Installs, maintains and repairs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and steam distribution equipment and systems to optimize energy use.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as hand tools, lap top computers and diagnostic hardware to perform work.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs computerized electronic pneumatic and digital direct control devises related to HVAC and heat control.
  • Operates various measuring, diagnostic and testing instruments.
  • Requisitions material and supplies from stockroom, calls vendors to discuss needs for parts and supplies, and recommends purchases and suppliers.
  • Reads complex blueprints, piping, sketches, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Maintains electronic/pneumatic testing equipment.
  • Performs brazing, soldering, pipefitting, welding and fabrication.
  • Maintains underground steam distribution system through repair and/or replacement of parts.
