About The Position

This position is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing railcars to ensure they are in safe working condition within an active railyard environment. The role involves performing semi-skilled mechanical work, supporting railcar readiness for operations, and adhering to strict safety and regulatory standards while working in a physically demanding, outdoor setting. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Training or certification in welding and/or mechanical repair required.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of repair techniques.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and welding/torch equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures in an industrial or railyard environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify defects or hazards.
  • Physical capability to perform manual labour in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a mechanical, railyard, or labor-intensive role considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform inspections of railcars to identify safety hazards or mechanical issues.
  • Complete repairs using hand tools, welding equipment, and torches.
  • Repair and replace components such as door edge protection and chock pans.
  • Install, remove, and maintain bridge plates.
  • Open, close, and lubricate railcar doors.
  • Raise deck extensions.
  • Ensure railcars are in safe operating condition and properly prepared for loading and unloading operations.
  • Complete inspection checklists, log seal numbers, and relevant data using handheld devices.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and accounted for.
  • Adhere to safety protocols, including raising blue flags, setting, verifying, and locking-out rail-track switches, ensuring proper track protection, setting and verifying railcar hand brakes, and maintaining three points of contact while working at heights.
  • Remove debris from railcars and surrounding tracks.
  • Maintain organized storage of materials and support general yard operations as required.
