About The Position

General Motors is seeking a Mechanical / Packaging Design Release Engineer to lead the design, packaging, release, and execution of shields and related mechanical interfaces for 12V components in vehicle programs. The role translates system and vehicle requirements into solutions for generators, inverters, converters, battery vent tubes, jump start nuts, and related hardware, with attention to performance, manufacturability, serviceability, quality, and program timing. The engineer owns mechanical design and package integration, develops component requirements and design concepts, and creates release documentation. The role works across electrical, systems, packaging, vehicle integration, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, and supplier teams, and supports technical reviews, validation planning, prototype and production builds, issue resolution, and corrective actions. The position requires technical ownership and the ability to manage multiple issues and deliverables against program milestones. General Motors describes its vision as a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions, and Zero Congestion, and states a commitment to inclusion and belonging. Its benefits overview says support for employee well-being is available from day one, but specific benefits are not listed in this posting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience in mechanical design, packaging, or design release engineering for automotive components.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, packaging integration, materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods.
  • Experience supporting shielding, brackets, housings, and packaging interfaces for automotive applications, including generators, inverters, converters, vent systems, jump start hardware, or similar 12V components.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T.
  • Experience using CAD tools for component design and package reviews.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional product development environment.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical issues and priorities in a fast-paced program setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with generator, inverter, converter, battery vent tube, jump start hardware, or similar 12V component packaging.
  • Experience with shield design, underhood packaging, bracket and attachment strategy, or vehicle electrical power environments.
  • Familiarity with shield mounting strategies, structural supports, vent routing, thermal protection, serviceability, and environmental protection considerations.
  • Experience with DFMEA, DVP&R, tolerance analysis, and change management.
  • Experience supporting supplier technical reviews, validation, and launch execution.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design release responsibility for assigned 12V component shields and related mechanical hardware.
  • Own mechanical design and package integration for shields supporting generators, inverters, converters, battery vent tubes, jump start nuts, and related 12V hardware.
  • Develop and maintain component requirements, design concepts, packaging studies, and release documentation.
  • Ensure shield designs meet vehicle packaging, environmental, mounting, sealing, durability, service, thermal, and assembly requirements.
  • Create and review engineering drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and engineering change documentation.
  • Drive vehicle package integration, including clearance management, attachment strategy, surrounding component interfaces, and issue resolution.
  • Coordinate with electrical, systems, packaging, and vehicle integration teams to ensure 12V component shields and related hardware are properly packaged and supported in the vehicle architecture.
  • Support CAD reviews, tolerance studies, DFMEA, DVP&R development, and validation planning.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to review designs, resolve technical issues, and support sourcing and execution.
  • Support prototype and production builds, issue resolution, root-cause investigations, and corrective-action implementation.
  • Manage engineering changes and deliverables in support of program timing, cost, quality, and performance targets.
  • Lead technical discussions, drive issue resolution, and execute engineering deliverables in support of program milestones.
