About The Position

The Component Design Engineer is part of Rolls-Royce’s Global Mechanical Systems Capability function and develops engineering solutions that satisfy product system and subsystem functional and physical requirements while supporting manufacturing capability. The role is accountable for timely, high-quality component design definition artifacts, including documents, models, and definitions that meet system- and subsystem-level requirements. The engineer participates in an Integrated Product Team and follows applicable Rolls-Royce Management System policies and processes, integrating technical activities for their design solutions and supporting lifecycle profitability through Supply Chain Design. The position delivers designs for components, complex assemblies, and whole engines, considering safety, manufacturability, robustness, cost, weight, maintainability, and repair. Work includes stakeholder-focused design definition, automated and model-based design workflows, producibility and defect prevention, quality assurance, engineering analyses, technical documentation, lifecycle support, external design-provider coordination, configuration management, and subsystem integration. The position is hybrid, with three office days per week, and is based in Novi, Michigan. Relocation assistance is not available.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required for consideration.
  • For Engineer I: a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 1 year of technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and cross-discipline engineering concepts, including manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering, and gas-turbine-engine product definition; or a master’s degree in engineering; or a JD/PhD in Engineering.
  • For Engineer II: a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 2 years of technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and cross-discipline engineering concepts, including manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering, and gas-turbine-engine product definition; or a master’s degree in engineering; or a JD/PhD in Engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical design methodologies and cross-discipline engineering concepts, including manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering, and gas-turbine-engine product definition.
  • Ability to apply logical, analytical, and innovative thinking to technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters.
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity, liability, and certification frameworks.
  • Good communication and presentation skills at all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver design solutions for components, complex assemblies, and whole engines, considering safety, manufacturing capability, physical and functional robustness, unit and lifecycle cost, weight, maintainability, and repair.
  • Deliver design definitions that meet stakeholder requirements, including those of manufacturing, project customers, airframers, partners, and analysis teams, following agreed policies and conventional or model-based approaches.
  • Create and use automated, integrated tool sets and workflows for repeat designs, using house style, standard features, and standard assessments to define component designs and associated manufacturing and measurement definitions.
  • Support elimination of non-conformance and zero defects, and deliver producible designs by analyzing customer and program requirements and incorporating manufacturing and measurement process capability.
  • Apply lean principles, standardization, robust design, systems engineering, risk management (xFMEA), and design-in-context approaches to improve design methods, rules, and tools and achieve repeatable, right-first-time outcomes.
  • Check design documents, models, and drawings for quality assurance in accordance with Rolls-Royce Management System technical requirements and proactive zero-defects approaches.
  • Perform formula-based or automated analyses for dimensioning parts and components, including stability, stiffness, profiles, balance point, and weight; use analytical rules, tools, and methods as appropriate to validate designs against requirements.
  • Create technical documents in compliance with process, knowledge-management, information, and data policies.
  • Enable through-life Supply Chain Design and lifecycle profitability for mature product fleets using mechanisms such as non-conformance management, drawing alteration requests, repair instructions, engine manual limits, and technical variants.
  • Plan, manage, and execute external designs through design service providers or suppliers authorized for design and production of complete devices, and obtain approval of designs and documents.
  • Manage product configuration and ensure data integrity.
  • Execute subsystem integration using appropriate Systems Engineering and Robust Design tools to ensure subsystem technical attributes meet agreed requirements.
