About The Position

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Insulator to install, repair, and maintain insulation systems for piping, HVAC ductwork, and mechanical equipment on construction and maintenance projects. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality work while maintaining Bird's commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence. This role will be based out of Thunder Bay, ON.

Requirements

  • Journeyperson Mechanical Insulator certification or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience working on industrial, commercial, institutional, infrastructure, power generation, or maintenance projects.
  • Knowledge of mechanical insulation systems, vapor barriers, jacketing systems, and weatherproofing applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and mechanical layouts.
  • Strong understanding of construction site safety practices.
  • Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in varying environmental conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment safely.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working around hazardous materials or asbestos abatement projects is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Install insulation on mechanical piping systems, including chilled water, steam, condensate, hydronic, domestic water, glycol, and process piping systems.
  • Install insulation on HVAC ductwork, plenums, supply, return, exhaust, and outdoor air systems.
  • Insulate mechanical equipment including air handling units, pumps, heat exchangers, storage tanks, boilers, and chillers.
  • Install vapor barriers, removable insulation covers, weatherproofing systems, and protective jacketing finishes including PVC, aluminum, and stainless steel.
  • Measure, cut, fabricate, and install insulation materials according to project specifications and industry standards.
  • Read and interpret drawings, specifications, and work packages to determine insulation requirements.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, HVAC, environmental, and safety teams to support project execution.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and comply with Bird Construction policies and site-specific safety requirements.
