Reporting to the Supervisor, Mechanical, the Mechanical Hand / Helper is responsible for completing work orders, assisting skilled trades persons, material handling, and supporting the operating plan. During our operating season, this role is also responsible for removing garbage and empty liquor bottles from train cars. The successful candidate will work closely with tradespeople, leadership, and contractors to assist in maintaining safe, compliant, optimally functioning equipment. This position is designated Safety Sensitive. The incumbent will be required to access active railway areas where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, the public, property, or the environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).

Nice To Haves

  • Technical or trades training in mechanics, electrical, or industrial maintenance (asset).
  • Railway Safety, WHMIS, and First Aid certification (asset).
  • Valid AB/BC Class 5 or 7 driver’s license (asset).
  • Previous experience in a rail, industrial, or facility maintenance environment (asset).
  • Familiarity with CMMS or other maintenance tracking systems (asset).
  • Willingness to obtain company-required training (e.g., first aid, forklift, fall protection, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic mechanical duties such as changing filters, topping up fluids, and repairing components.
  • Collect and dispose of garbage, recyclables, organic waste and empty liquor bottles
  • Replenish onboard supplies (water, soap, paper products, etc.).
  • Wash and degrease mechanical components or undercarriage areas as directed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of shops, vehicles, and service areas
  • Safely operate basic shop and yard equipment (e.g., forklifts, power tools, cleaning machines)
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, defects, or hazards to supervision.
  • Provide mechanical support across the department by assisting in performing inspections, repairs, and scheduled maintenance on locomotives and passenger railcars.
  • Know and follow all safety rules, policies, and railway operating procedures.
  • Participate in training and development, including familiarization with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR).
  • Support a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and customer service.
  • Perform work both indoors and outdoors, in varying weather conditions, as part of a 24/7 operation.
