Mechanical Estimator

Tutor Perini•Evansville, IN

About The Position

Frontier-Kemper’s Lake Shore division, a Tutor Perini company, is seeking a Mechanical Estimator to join its office in Evansville, Indiana. The division provides design, build, and installation services for hoisting and vertical conveyance systems. Frontier-Kemper specializes in heavy civil construction and underground mine development, including engineering and construction of deep shafts and tunnels. The Mechanical Estimator develops accurate, competitive, and complete cost estimates for mechanical systems supporting underground mining and heavy operations. The role leads estimating from early concept through final bid proposal and partners with engineering, operations, procurement, and project management to define scope, validate constructability, quantify work, and evaluate risk. The position supports underground mechanical work such as hoisting, piping, pumping and dewatering, ventilation, compressed air, process and material-handling equipment, and ancillary systems. The position also contributes to bid strategy, value engineering, constructability reviews, proposal development, schedule integration, historical cost data, and project handoff after award. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of project estimating experience, preferably in underground mining or a heavy industrial environment with significant mechanical scope.
  • At least 10 years in engineering, project planning, and/or project management, with demonstrated ability to align estimate scope with execution strategy.
  • Proven experience producing estimates for underground mechanical work packages, including labor and equipment build-ups and indirect cost modeling.
  • Ability to interpret and apply mechanical drawings, P&IDs, layouts, specifications, and vendor data.
  • Ability to interpret contract requirements, including commercial terms, scope boundaries, alternates, and unit rates.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, safety requirements, and work constraints.
  • Advanced proficiency with project tools such as AutoCAD, Excel (including cost models, pivot tables, lookups, rate builds, and scenario analysis), and Microsoft Project or similar.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple assignments and balance priorities against customer deliverables.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mining Engineering (strongly preferred).
  • Underground mining or heavy industrial experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare conceptual, preliminary, and definitive estimates for underground mining mechanical systems, including CAPEX/OPEX as applicable.
  • Perform detailed quantity takeoffs from drawings, models, and specifications for mechanical packages.
  • Develop pricing for labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, indirect costs, temporary systems, logistics, and commissioning/start-up support.
  • Solicit and analyze vendor and subcontractor quotes, checking alignment with scope, schedule, and site constraints.
  • Build and validate project-based deliverables and maintain historical databases and records to streamline future processes.
  • Lead estimating inputs for underground mechanical installations, fabrication and installation planning, and temporary works and construction support systems.
  • Identify and price risks, contingency, allowances, and exclusions; document estimate basis and assumptions.
  • Participate in bid strategy, value engineering, and constructability reviews with customers, operations, and engineering.
  • Support proposal development, including clarifications, scope narratives, estimate summaries, and bid-close packages.
  • Collaborate with project planning and controls to incorporate schedule assumptions and sequencing into estimates.
  • Maintain and improve historical cost databases, benchmarks, and lessons learned for underground mechanical work.
  • Support project-team handoff after award, including estimate validation, budget setup, and change/trend alignment.
