About The Position

As a member of SpaceX’s construction and infrastructure team, the Mechanical Engineer (Facilities) designs, builds, and activates technically advanced manufacturing facilities. The role serves as the subject matter expert for HVAC, compressed air, piping, dust collection, and other critical fluid systems at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California. It involves designing, analyzing, testing, and manufacturing fluid-system elements while collaborating with construction engineers, architects, and internal customers to support SpaceX programs and facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience working with fluid components such as valves, pumps, COPVs, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure transducers, or temperature sensors.
  • Willingness to work extended hours and/or weekends as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with liquid and/or gas fluid-handling systems.
  • Experience using data acquisition equipment, test instrumentation, and control components such as pressure transducers, thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors, and relays.
  • Experience with HVAC systems and air ducting.
  • Experience with NX or other CAD packages and a solid understanding and application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5-1994 and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Experience with structural analysis methods to optimize hardware to strength requirements and evaluate life and fracture.
  • Experience with pressurized structures and/or lightweight aerospace structures.

Responsibilities

  • Own fluid and HVAC components across campus and serve as the subject matter expert for compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and dust collection systems.
  • Perform CAD modeling and design of fluid and HVAC systems.
  • Perform fluid analyses for pressure balance, component design allowables, and consumables determination.
  • Work with interdisciplinary customers to ensure components meet the requirements of production, avionics, GNC, mission operations, and other SpaceX programs.
  • Ensure designs are manufacturable and reliable; work with production to transition designs to reliable manufacturing processes requiring minimal design-engineering sustainment.
  • Support material selection, sizing, and procurement.
