Mechanical Engineer - Commercial HVAC & Mechanical Construction

MechanAirAurora, IL
$78,000 - $125,000Onsite

About The Position

State Mechanical Services (SMS) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and support the technical execution of commercial HVAC and mechanical systems from concept through coordinated construction, startup, commissioning, and closeout. In our design-build and design-assist environment, you will work with project management, BIM/VDC, estimating, and field teams to advance constructability, system performance, field execution, customer outcomes, and project economics. The position may be filled at a developing, experienced, or Senior Mechanical Engineer level. Level and scope reflect relevant experience, technical capability, independence, commercial HVAC/mechanical construction expertise, scope of responsibility, and professional licensure where applicable—not years of experience alone.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated capability in HVAC design, mechanical systems, engineering calculations, equipment selection, and construction documentation.
  • Working knowledge of applicable mechanical, energy, building, and other relevant codes and engineering standards.
  • Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD and the ability to work effectively within BIM/VDC coordination processes.
  • Ability to produce accurate, coordinated work, manage priorities, document decisions, and meet project deadlines.
  • Clear technical communication and effective collaboration across office, field, vendor, and customer teams.
  • Sound judgment in identifying technical risk, evaluating tradeoffs, and resolving problems appropriate to assigned level.

Nice To Haves

  • Commercial HVAC or commercial mechanical construction experience in a design-build or design-assist environment.
  • Field engineering, constructability, commissioning, or mechanical project engineering experience.
  • EIT certification preferred for developing engineers; PE licensure preferred for senior-level candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Design commercial HVAC, hydronic, and mechanical systems; perform HVAC load calculations, system sizing, equipment selection, controls coordination, technical analysis, and code review.
  • Develop and review mechanical drawings, specifications, permit and construction documents, submittents, RFIs, design changes, equipment substitutions, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Use Revit, AutoCAD, and BIM/VDC tools to coordinate multidisciplinary designs and models, resolve clashes, and translate engineering intent into constructible field solutions.
  • Evaluate alternatives for system performance, constructability, labor, materials, equipment, schedule, cost, and technical risk.
  • Coordinate technical execution with project management, estimating, BIM/VDC, field teams, vendors, and customers from design through installation.
  • Provide field engineering through site reviews, startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and closeout; verify installed systems meet design intent.
  • Produce accurate, timely, coordinated, and code-compliant work that supports quality, field productivity, and reliable system performance.
  • At the senior level, independently solve complex technical problems, identify risk early, guide engineering work, and communicate tradeoffs and recommendations.
