About The Position

AeroVironment (AV) is hiring Mechanical Engineers at multiple levels to work onsite in Albuquerque, New Mexico, or Germantown, Maryland. The position supports the design, analysis, integration, and testing of advanced RF and electromechanical systems for aerospace and defense missions. Engineers collaborate with experienced colleagues and cross-functional teams to develop reliable, manufacturable products and contribute throughout the product lifecycle, from early design and analysis through prototyping, qualification, production, and field support. Areas of work may include mechanical design, thermal or structural analysis, electronics packaging, and integration and test. The role uses modern engineering tools and hands-on hardware to address technically challenging problems. Level and responsibilities depend on qualifications, experience, and program needs. The position requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline, relevant experience, 3D CAD skills, and knowledge of mechanical design, engineering drawings, materials, manufacturing processes, and GD&T. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required. The position also requires access to information governed by ITAR and/or EAR; applicants will be asked to provide documentation verifying U.S. person status. Some positions require U.S. citizenship due to contract requirements. The stated salary range is $75,000 to $160,000, with compensation determined by level and other factors. AV's benefits package includes health, medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; paid time off and company holidays; parental leave; a 401(k) with company match and contributions; professional development and training reimbursements; a 9/80 work schedule; paid holiday shutdown; and other work/life programs. Occasional travel to customer, supplier, test, or field locations may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • Relevant experience in mechanical design, analysis, product development, or hardware integration; level is determined by qualifications and experience.
  • Experience with 3D CAD software; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical design, engineering drawings, materials, manufacturing processes, and GD&T.
  • Familiarity with structural, thermal, vibration, or environmental analysis methods.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required.
  • Must provide documentation verifying U.S. person status for ITAR and/or EAR compliance; some positions require current U.S. citizenship due to contract requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with RF systems, radar, communications systems, phased arrays, electronic warfare, or embedded electronics.
  • Experience with electronics packaging, high-power RF hardware, or electromechanical systems.
  • Experience using ANSYS or similar structural, thermal, CFD, or finite element analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with thermal-management technologies and environmental qualification testing.
  • Knowledge of machining, sheet-metal fabrication, additive manufacturing, composites, or other production processes.
  • Experience with PLM, PDM, configuration management, production transition, supplier coordination, or manufacturing integration.
  • Familiarity with AS9100, ISO 9001, or other regulated engineering environments.
  • Experience leading technical tasks, conducting trade studies, or mentoring engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, enclosures, chassis, fixtures, payloads, and support equipment for advanced RF and electromechanical systems.
  • Create and maintain CAD models, assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, and configuration-controlled technical documentation.
  • Perform or support structural, thermal, vibration, and tolerance analyses.
  • Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, design-for-manufacturability, and design-for-assembly principles.
  • Develop electronics-packaging and thermal-management solutions, including heatsinks, thermal interfaces, heat spreaders, conduction cooling, and airflow.
  • Collaborate with RF, electrical, FPGA, software, systems, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and test teams.
  • Support prototyping, fabrication, assembly, integration, environmental testing, qualification, production, and field support throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Participate in design reviews and support configuration management, revision control, PLM, and engineering change processes.
  • Investigate design, manufacturing, integration, and test issues; support root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing teams to improve producibility, production readiness, cost, quality, and schedule performance.
  • Own assigned technical tasks and, depending on experience, lead technical efforts or mentor other engineers.
  • Support occasional travel to customers, suppliers, test, or field locations.
