Mechanical Engineer Supporting ASIC Test

Broadcom•Fort Collins, CA

About The Position

This mechanical engineering position develops thermal management and robust socketing solutions for test and validation PCBs used with Broadcom ASIC products for hyperscale data center applications. The role supports products for AI and cloud storage and works closely with PCB electrical design engineers, device package designers, vendors, and internal teams. The engineer designs and verifies mechanical components, develops socket and cooling solutions, evaluates device warpage, troubleshoots mechanical and electrical contact issues, and manages hardware vendors and procurement. The role also uses simulation, measurement, prototyping, and data analysis tools to improve test hardware quality and usability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and 8+ years of experience, or a master’s degree and 6+ years of experience, developing semiconductor socket and cooling solutions.
  • In-depth experience using Solidworks.
  • Experience using Ansys Icepack and/or Solidworks FLOW thermal analysis and simulation software.
  • Experience using Ansys mechanical simulation software.
  • Experience managing vendors in the test hardware manufacturing process.
  • Strong sense of design ownership and collaborative approach to improving mechanical solutions.
  • Good mechanical prototyping skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with socketing and cooling very large, high-power, high-ball-count ASIC devices.
  • Experience with pogo-pin and elastomeric IC socket solutions.
  • Mechanical debugging intuition and comfort with basic hand tools, micrometers, and calipers.
  • Basic knowledge of ATE test hardware mechanical configurations.
  • Familiarity with Keyence profilometry equipment.
  • Ability to manipulate large datasets using tools such as Excel or scripts in Python.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and quality output.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, including comfort managing vendors and internal team customers.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with PCB electrical design engineers to provide robust ASIC socket and thermal solutions for their designs.
  • Perform mechanical component design and design verification using Solidworks.
  • Perform 3D mechanical extractions from Allegro PCB design software.
  • Interface with device package designers and generate device warpage profiles for socket designs from raw simulation data.
  • Measure actual device warpage using high-precision profilometry equipment to validate simulation profiles.
  • Manage socket hardware vendors, review and provide feedback on designs, and approve designs.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical contact issues in laboratory and test-floor environments.
  • Design and review air, liquid, and cold-plate cooling solutions for test hardware.
  • Evaluate and manage procurement of mechanical and test hardware, including thermal control units and socket resistance measurement platforms.
  • Use 3D printing to address team headaches and usability issues.
