Mechanical Engineer III - Design

Voyager Technologies•Reno, AL

About The Position

Voyager Technologies is hiring a Mechanical Engineer III to contribute to the design and development of defense, national security, and space technologies. The role involves designing actuators, igniters, pressure vessels, solid rocket motor systems, hot gas valves, and thrusters; conducting performance, stress, structural, dynamic, thermal, and tolerance analyses; and making design recommendations based on trade studies and alternatives analysis. The engineer will create 2D and 3D CAD models, complex assemblies, and technical drawings, applying GD&T and functional tolerancing. Work also involves evaluating materials—including ceramics, rubber, phenolics, advanced metals, and refractory metals—and contributing to insulator systems, customized material solutions, and research and development. Manufacturing-related activities include additive manufacturing, mechanical assembly, carbon composites, machining, molding and casting, welding, and manufacturing planning. The position also includes technical communications and reporting, knowledge of solid propellant chemistry and grain configuration, mass budgeting and reduction, program planning, acquisition life-cycle coordination, requirements analysis, and reliability, safety, and risk management. Approximately 10% travel is required. The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain an appropriate U.S. security clearance and meet applicable U.S. technology export-control requirements.

Requirements

  • Four to seven years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Must be able to travel approximately 10% of the time.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. Government space technology export-control requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Rocket motor design and testing experience.
  • Master of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university; equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Current DoD Top Secret SCI Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Design actuators, igniters, pressure vessels, solid rocket motor systems, hot gas valves, and thrusters.
  • Analyze performance and conduct stress, structural, dynamic, thermal, CFD, and tolerance analyses; interpret and validate results and optimize designs.
  • Perform trade studies, analyze alternatives, and provide design recommendations.
  • Create 2D and 3D models, complex assemblies, and precise technical drawings using CAD tools and interpret GD&T.
  • Evaluate material properties and characterization, including ceramics, rubber and phenolic insulators, advanced metals, and refractory metals; contribute to insulator systems and materials research and development.
  • Perform or support manufacturing activities involving additive manufacturing, mechanical assembly, carbon composites, machining, molding and casting, welding, and manufacturing planning.
  • Prepare and present technical information, reports, and user manuals for different audiences.
  • Apply knowledge of propellant chemistry, combustion mechanisms, grain configuration design, and solid propellant formulation and manufacturing.
  • Contribute to mass calculations, mass budgets, and mass reduction efforts.
  • Develop program plans, understand acquisition life cycles, and coordinate activities.
  • Conduct requirements analysis and contribute to reliability, safety, and risk management activities.
  • Travel approximately 10% of the time.
