Mechanical Engineer III - Design

Voyager Technologies, Inc.•Reno, NV
•$97,920 - $155,300

About The Position

Voyager Technologies is hiring a Mechanical Engineer III to contribute to mechanical design, analysis, drafting and modeling, materials, manufacturing, communications, ballistics, and systems engineering work. The role involves solving complex design challenges; developing and assessing actuators, pressure vessels, hot gas valves, thrusters, and solid rocket motor systems; and performing design trades and recommendations. The engineer creates detailed 2D and 3D models, assemblies, and technical drawings, and performs structural, dynamic, thermal, tolerance, and basic CFD analyses. Work also includes evaluating materials and insulation systems, supporting manufacturing and assembly processes, and producing technical reports and presentations. The role contributes to mass budgeting, program planning, requirements analysis, reliability and safety, and risk management. The position requires a relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, four to seven years of mechanical engineering experience, approximately 10% travel, and the ability to obtain and maintain an appropriate U.S. security clearance. Applicants must meet applicable U.S. government export-control eligibility requirements. Salary ranges vary by location: California, $108,800–$155,300; Nevada, $97,920–$139,770. Voyager describes its total compensation package as including competitive salary, a discretionary annual bonus plan, paid time off, health benefits, retirement savings, a wellness program, and other benefits.

Requirements

  • Four to seven years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university; equivalent experience may be considered instead of a degree.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% of the time.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance at the appropriate level; U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must meet U.S. government space technology export-control eligibility requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Rocket motor design and testing experience.
  • Master of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline from an accredited university; equivalent experience may be considered instead of a degree.
  • Current DoD Top Secret SCI Security Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Apply mechanical design principles and develop actuator, pressure vessel, hot gas valve, thruster, and solid rocket motor designs.
  • Analyze igniter and system performance, perform stress analysis, and incorporate advanced control systems.
  • Conduct design trades, evaluate alternatives, and provide design recommendations.
  • Create 2D and 3D models, complex assemblies, and precise technical drawings using CAD tools; interpret GD&T symbols.
  • Perform CFD simulations and structural, dynamic, thermal, and tolerance analyses; interpret and validate results and optimize designs.
  • Analyze geometric features, datum reference frames, and functional tolerancing, and recommend design or manufacturing process improvements.
  • Evaluate ceramic, rubber, phenolic, advanced metal, and refractory materials and contribute to insulator systems, material characterization, and alloy and technology development.
  • Support additive manufacturing, mechanical assembly, carbon composite manufacturing, machining, molding, casting, welding, and manufacturing planning.
  • Prepare technical reports, user manuals, presentations, and other communications for different audiences.
  • Apply knowledge of propellant chemistry, combustion mechanisms, grain configuration design, and solid propellant formulation and manufacturing.
  • Perform mass calculations, understand mass budgets, and contribute to mass reduction efforts.
  • Develop program plans, understand acquisition life cycles, and coordinate activities.
  • Apply reliability, safety, requirements analysis, and risk management principles and lead related activities.
