Mechanical Engineer II

Hologic•Marlborough, MA
•$78,000 - $122,000

About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer II supports new product development of medical equipment from concept through design transfer. Under the direction of project and engineering leads, the role applies engineering judgment and customer-centered design principles to develop cost-conscious frames, skins, and mechanical interfaces. The position handles assigned tasks of simple to moderate complexity, with close supervision for unusual or difficult problems and general oversight of other work. The engineer contributes to mechanical design, component integration, design-for-manufacturing and assembly, engineering analysis, prototype and verification testing, and preparation of engineering documentation. The role also participates in design reviews and project meetings and supports prototype builds, manufacturing transfer, and production readiness in collaboration with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and manufacturing engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with research and development experience in the medical device industry.
  • With a bachelor's degree, 2 years of work experience in the health and/or business communities; with a master's degree, 0–2 years of work experience in those communities.
  • Competence in SolidWorks part, assembly, and drawing creation, including organized models that reflect design intent.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, and functional datums; ability to apply tolerances appropriate to product function and manufacturing capability.
  • Working knowledge of frame and enclosure design, including structural support, component mounting, fit and alignment, access, and serviceability.
  • Familiarity with relevant manufacturing processes, including machining, casting, sheet-metal fabrication, injection molding, joining, rapid prototyping, and plating.
  • Ability to support mechanical design of electromechanical interfaces, including pump mounting and integration, and console-to-disposable interfaces such as FMS FloPaks.
  • Practical problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to prepare clear technical documentation, including engineering reports, protocols, and verification and validation records, with moderate guidance.
  • Clear technical communication and ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, manufacturing engineers, and project stakeholders.
  • Ability to travel as necessary, up to 10%.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with experiments, test methods, statistical tools, design of experiments (DOE), or Minitab.
  • SolidWorks experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned mechanical design and project tasks for new product development from concept through design transfer under project and engineering leads.
  • Support the development of product frames and skins, accounting for structural performance, weight, appearance, cleanability, service access, manufacturability, and cost.
  • Create and update SolidWorks parts, assemblies, and drawings in accordance with project requirements and engineering practices, considering interfaces, functional dimensions, tolerances, and design intent.
  • Support mechanical integration of electromechanical components, including pumps, console frames, electrical systems, and fluid pathways.
  • Support design and evaluation of interfaces between reusable consoles and disposable components such as FMS FloPaks, considering alignment, connection, retention, sealing, usability, and reliable operation.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing and assembly principles; identify cost drivers and cost-reduction opportunities and evaluate alternatives with guidance from senior engineers and suppliers.
  • Use knowledge of machining, casting, bent sheet-metal fabrication, injection molding, and plating to develop manufacturable designs and incorporate supplier and manufacturing feedback.
  • Conduct engineering research, analysis, tolerance stack-ups, and investigations; support prototype and verification testing and use results to resolve design issues.
  • Prepare and maintain assigned engineering deliverables, including design documentation, risk inputs, protocols, reports, and verification and validation records, with review and guidance.
  • Participate in design reviews and project meetings and communicate progress, technical findings, risks, and open issues to project and cross-functional team members.
  • Support prototype builds, manufacturing transfer, and production-readiness activities, including documentation, supplier coordination, and resolution of build issues.
  • Apply risk-management tools to identify, assess, and help mitigate design and process risks during new product development.
  • Perform other function-related activities as reasonably required by business needs.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive training upon joining and continued development and training throughout the career.
  • Competitive salary.
  • Annual bonus scheme.
