About The Position

Advanced Energy is hiring a Mechanical Engineer II to provide mechanical engineering support for product development and sustaining efforts. Working on a cross-functional product design team, the engineer will contribute to products from initial concept through end-user qualification and production release. The role involves collaboration with teams and stakeholders worldwide, including vendors, OEMs, and end users, and provides technical direction on thermal and structural challenges. The engineer will design, analyze, and document cooling solutions and electronic systems, validate simulations and calculations through testing, and create mechanical models and drawings. The role also involves specifying experiments, evaluating simulated and empirical data, and designing products for manufacturability, assembly, testability, and serviceability. The position is based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, in a standard office environment.

Requirements

  • 1–5 years of related design experience in the development of electronic systems.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Advanced computer skills with CAD software such as SolidWorks or similar.
  • Solid understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), including reducing complexity and part count and improving manufacturability, testability, and serviceability.
  • Working knowledge of ANSI Y14.5, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Knowledge of materials science, including nonlinear thermophysical behavior, materials compatibility, metal alloying, corrosion, electron and heat transfer, and dielectric loss.
  • Experience with numerical analysis software such as ANSYS, CFD-ACE+, or COMSOL.
  • Ability to specify experiments and procedures to prove, test, and monitor design concepts.
  • Ability to evaluate simulated and empirical data, understand error and uncertainty in both methods, correlate datasets, and develop multiple solution paths for challenging problems.
  • Ability to self-manage project work from start to finish, including meeting schedule and cost requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team, balancing time and scope to meet specification and scheduling demands.
  • Provide mechanical support for product development and sustaining efforts, including technical direction on thermal and structural challenges.
  • Design, analyze, and document cold plates, heat sinks, and other electronics-cooling mechanisms.
  • Model and design heat transfer for air- and water-cooled electronic systems.
  • Perform tests to validate simulations and calculations, including numerical analysis of fluid transport, conjugate heat transfer, structural mechanics, and coupled electromagnetic-mechanical cases.
  • Create mechanical models and drawings to Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) standards and perform complex dimensional tolerance analyses.
  • Specify experiments and procedures to prove, test, and monitor design concepts.
  • Apply design for manufacturing and assembly practices to reduce complexity and part count, incorporate Poke Yoke, and improve manufacturability, testability, and serviceability.
  • Design products and subcomponents using manufacturing methods such as sheet metal fabrication, machining, casting, molding, extruding, stamping, and 3D printing.
  • Manage project work from start to finish, including scheduling and cost conformance.

Benefits

  • Annual pay-for-performance incentive plan.
  • Discounted Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Multiple medical plans.
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Health savings and flexible spending accounts.
  • Paid vacation starting at three weeks.
  • Seven days of paid sick time.
  • Twelve paid holidays.
  • Eight hours of paid volunteer time off.
  • Eight weeks of paid parental leave for both parents.
  • Company-matched 401(k).
