About The Position

Are you inspired by invention? Is problem solving through teamwork in your DNA? Do you like the idea of seeing how your work impacts the bigger picture? Answer yes to any of these and you’ll fit right in here at Amazon Robotics. We are a smart, collaborative team of doers that work passionately to apply advances in robotics and software to solve real-world challenges that will transform our customers’ experiences in ways we can’t even image yet. We invent new improvements every day. We are Amazon Robotics and we will give you the tools and support you need to invent with us in ways that are rewarding, fulfilling and fun. Job Overview – As an Amazon Robotics mechanical engineer, you will develop innovative system architectures and hardware designs for our robotic systems. The ideal candidate has experience Designing sheetmetal components, weldments, and mechanical assemblies for high-volume manufacturing, incorporating appropriate features for sheetmetal and other high-volume production methods while accounting for variation and tolerances to ensure products remain functional over extended runs. Using CAD to develop concepts, detailed assemblies, and design evaluations, applying engineering fundamentals and analytical skills to validate that hardware is functional, long-lasting, and robust, with or without prototypes or functional testing. Working with significant autonomy to deliver mechanical design solutions for projects with ambiguous or unrefined requirements, breaking down problems into logical categories, developing requirements, and providing solutions within robotic system constraints. A general understanding of automation controls and sensing technologies, with experience selecting and incorporating commercially available components into mechanical designs to balance performance, cost, and development timelines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • SolidWorks or similar CAD for part design, advanced assemblies, complex configuration management, and using CAD tools to evaluate fit, function, and capability of designs
  • Thorough understanding and use of principals, theories and concepts in mechanical engineering
  • Ability to effectively communicate concepts and write technical documents
  • Experience designing for high-volume manufacturing processes including sheetmetal fabrication, weldments, and similar methods
  • Demonstrated ability to work with significant autonomy to solve problems and deliver mechanical design solutions
  • Experience developing solutions for projects with ambiguous or unrefined requirements
  • Experience selecting and incorporating commercially available (off-the-shelf) components into mechanical designs

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of SolidWorks simulation or Ansys Finite Element analysis tools
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment through the full product development cycle from inception through maturity including creating associated documentation (specs, test plans, drawings, etc.)
  • Proficiency documenting designs in accordance with ANSI Y-14.5
  • Experience designing, debugging, and optimizing components for high-volume production methods such as stamping, casting, injection molding, or similar
  • Proven experience in root cause analysis
  • Proficiency with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software and processing engineering change orders (ECOs)
  • Experience collaborating with controls engineers or independently defining and optimizing the integration of sensors and motion components (motors, actuators, linear drives) within mechanical designs

Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production including specification, design, prototyping, validation and testing
  • Working with the Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Quality organizations as well as vendors to ensure a smooth product launch
  • Writing functional specifications, design verification plans, and functional test procedures
  • Demonstrating thorough engineering analysis and full ownership of designs from concept through production support
  • Independently designing and adapting holistic hardware solutions for ambiguous problems with fluid requirements
