About The Position

The Mechanical Engineer will play a critical role in the research and development of leading-edge, industry-defining solar tracker components and more. You will lead our advancements in tracker product vision, innovation, enhancements, and improvements, as you drive our next-generation products and features. Working with all levels of management, engineering, and other departments, you will create and select state-of-the-art technologies and products. This position may require occasional evening and weekend hours.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience with SolidWorks
  • 3+ years of design experience with structural components and hardware, gearing, and/or drivetrains
  • 2+ years of experience thoroughly and accurately documenting design intent, analysis results, test results, etc.
  • 2+ years of experience with electromechanical production machinery
  • 2+ years of experience with Microsoft Office, 3D CAD and ERP
  • 2+ years of experience defining and setup of tests and running experiments

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Structural component design, civil engineering and wind loading experience
  • Design skills (e.g., FEA, DFA, DFM, design-for-cost, etc.)
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment
  • Background in product development
  • Track record of delivering products
  • Experience in the solar industry
  • Knowledge of utility-scale PV plant design and construction
  • Experience with Stage Gate Product Development processes
  • Metal/steel fabrication experience
  • Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team
  • Knowledge in application of design-for-reliability
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, prioritizing, time-management, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to work across multiple organizations in a fast paced, smaller company environment

Responsibilities

  • Identify and contribute to mechanical, structural, and civil engineering product improvements, technology vision, and roadmap.
  • Define needs and goals for new products in design, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Provide recommendations on mechanical aspects of new concepts.
  • Evaluate existing products and identify opportunities for improvements.
  • Create concepts and preliminary designs for new products and product improvements.
  • Prepare complete mechanical drawings using SolidWorks for fabrication of testable prototypes.
  • Analyze and assess product concepts for customer needs, ease of installation, business cases, manufacturability, reliability, and safety.
  • Contribute to the design review process and provide input on critical design decisions.
  • Obtain components/supplies/equipment to support prototype assembly.
  • Conduct preliminary OEM vendor assessment/selection.
  • Analyze different materials, techniques, manufacturing processes, design tolerances, etc.
  • Fabricate and tests new designs.
  • Recommend best product innovations and concept designs to bring into the product line.
  • Provide regular management updates.
  • Create and maintain necessary documentation.
  • Coordinate prototype fabrication by working with machine shops and other engineering teams.
  • Participate in prototype assembly and revision.
  • Define test scope/criteria and coordinate testing with other engineering teams.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
