About The Position

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks an professional, innovative and detailed individual to join our team as an experienced Mechanical Designer. If you would like to learn new technology for designing parts, then this position may be for you! A typical day as a Mechanical Designer may include: Organizing and tracking incoming work using JIRA and established project and workflow tools. Understanding and reviewing Vendor Data sheets for electronic components to discern necessary schematic symbols, PCB Footprints and related library data. Creating and maintaining schematic symbols, PCB footprints, and related library data using ECAD library tools (Mentor Xpedition/EDM Librarian). Developing accurate 3D models, assemblies and drawings of components based on vendor documentation and internal standards, and managing those models within Solidworks/Solidworks EDM. Performing routine calculations related to geometry, fit, and form to support accurate 2D and 3D modeling and documentation. Preparing basic spreadsheets for comparisons, calculations, and data organization as needed. Communicating regularly with engineers and designers to understand requirements, clarify questions, and share information. Participating in meetings to support coordination and alignment across projects. Locating and applying internal documentation, standards, and reference material, as well as researching information from manufacturer resources. Maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, recognizing that quality library data is critical to downstream design success. Requirements

  • An engineering technology, CAD technology degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of 2D and 3D CAD drafting fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with electrical or electronic components and basic schematic conventions.
  • Experience working with CAD or ECAD tools in a design or library‑support role.
  • Ability to create or interpret parts, assemblies, and drawings while applying standard tolerances.
  • Comfort working with spreadsheets and basic calculations.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately in a quality‑focused environment.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality work in a standards‑driven environment.
  • Openness to receiving frequent feedback, with the ability to respond constructively, correct errors, and continuously improve without taking feedback personally.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with engineers and designers.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and contribute as part of a team.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience (level and title dependent).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using project tracking or documentation systems is a plus.
