About The Position

The Mechanical Designer provides critical engineering support for Elemental LED's award-winning portfolio of lighting products, dimmers, and drivers. The position involves a combination of new product design, sustaining engineering, product testing and validation, and manufacturing support. This engineer will dedicate 80% of their focus to overseeing Gammalux’s precision architectural lighting systems and 20% to Elemental LED’s various product lines. Receiving hands-on training and direction directly from the Gammalux Engineering team, the engineer will fulfill specialized customer requests by creating highly detailed customizations for unique architectural spaces. Additionally, this role requires travel to the San Dimas location to provide on-site support and manage essential engineering documentation processes, with travel frequency varying from occasional to routine depending on primary or backup support designations.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Computer-Aided Drafting, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field.; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 6+ years of extensive mechanical design experience, preferably handling large assemblies
  • Expert-level proficiency in 3D CAD software and PDM administration (SolidWorks, Creo, Autodesk Inventor, or similar)
  • Deep, practical knowledge of diverse manufacturing processes and material properties
  • Experience using Finite Element Analysis to improve CAD models
  • Familiarized with additive manufacturing (i.e. experience using 3D printers, designing lattices, knowledge of different types of additive manufacturing processes)
  • Ability to manage multiple design tasks independently with minimal supervision

Responsibilities

  • Lead design of packaging of complex, multi-component electro-mechanical systems
  • Design of mechanical lighting components, including extrusions, channels, electromechanical connectors, switches, and junction boxes.
  • Anticipate and resolve physical interferences and design challenges early in the design phase
  • Conduct comprehensive tolerance stack-up analyses on critical assemblies
  • Establish and enforce company-wide CAD standards, templates, and drafting best practices
  • Create design drawings, assembly drawings, cable/wire drawings, and specification drawings
  • Create component fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, cable/wire drawings, and specification drawings
  • Create wiring diagrams and manufacturing assembly instructions using CAD software
  • Collaborate with a multi-functional team of engineers and designers
  • Assist with assembling prototype systems
  • Measure parts using testing equipment to refine the design
  • Select appropriate off-the-shelf hardware, brackets, and fastening components.
  • Provide engineering support for production tools, including resin/potting machines
  • Support inter-site manufacturing efforts through active involvement at the San Dimas facility to provide on-site support, manage engineering documentation processes, and facilitate custom mechanical detailing
  • Performs other duties as assigned
