Mechanical Designer

CorningHickory, NC

About The Position

Corning is a world leader in glass, ceramic, and materials science, known for its innovation in various fields. The company's technologies push boundaries, from ocean depths to space exploration. Corning's success is driven by its people who consistently break through limitations and drive progress. At Corning, there are endless possibilities to make an impact, contributing to advancements in life sciences, mobile electronics, optical communications, display, automotive, and solar markets. The company is transforming the world with trusted products for drug discovery, damage-resistant cover glass for devices, optical fiber for high-speed communication, precision glass for advanced displays, auto glass and ceramics for cleaner transportation, and solar solutions for low-cost energy. This role focuses on designing and developing mechanical systems that enable advanced technologies to move from research and development into scalable, production-ready manufacturing solutions. The Mechanical Designer will translate early concepts into robust mechanical designs that perform reliably in high-volume manufacturing environments.

Requirements

  • Strong experience designing mechanisms, structures, and assemblies intended for production use—not just prototypes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across disciplines (process, controls, manufacturing, quality) to deliver integrated solutions.
  • Technical credibility that enables influence across teams, functions, and partner organizations.
  • Experience supporting the transition of technologies from R&D or pilot environments into manufacturing.
  • Comfortable working in environments where requirements evolve as learning progresses.
  • Must be available for significant travel, primarily domestic, to multiple locations to support business needs. International travel could be required as well.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline
  • 8+ years of applied mechanical design experience in manufacturing, automation, or industrial equipment environments. Will consider less years of experience with advanced degree.
  • Experience designing for automation, precision assembly, or high-throughput manufacturing systems.
  • Familiarity with tolerance analysis, materials selection, and design for reliability.
  • Experience collaborating with external suppliers, integrators, or contract manufacturers.
  • Strong CAD proficiency and experience managing design documentation through release and revision cycles.

Responsibilities

  • Design precision mechanical components, assemblies, and subsystems for advanced manufacturing equipment.
  • Collaborate across mechanical, process, controls, and manufacturing teams to ensure designs meet functional, quality, and production requirements.
  • Support the evolution of designs from early development and prototyping through pilot builds and manufacturing deployment.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to ensure designs are robust, serviceable, and scalable.
  • Partner with suppliers and fabrication partners to refine designs for manufacturability and cost effectiveness.
  • Contribute to troubleshooting, design iteration, and continuous improvement as systems transition into production use.

Benefits

  • Employee Referral Amount: $1,500.00
