About The Position

CommScope is seeking a Mechanical Designer IV to join our team in Shakopee, MN. In this role, you will contribute to the development of innovative fiber optic products used in data centers worldwide. A Mechanical Designer IV develops and releases designs and detailed drawings of components and assemblies using CAD software. This position focuses on fiber optic connector, cable assembly, and apparatus product development. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional engineering teams and engage with key stakeholders across Product Line Management, Operations, Purchasing, and other internal groups. This is a fully on-site role (5 days per week).

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in creation of complex 3D models and drawings
  • Expertise in parametric modeling (Creo, SolidWorks, others)
  • Proficiency in GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional environments
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and BOM structures

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Design, Industrial Design, or a related field. Candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree may be considered with fewer years of experience, depending on the relevance of their academic background to the role
  • Knowledge of Creo CAD software. Previous Creo knowledge is not required to be hired if the candidate has previous experience in another CAD system. However, if hired, the candidate must learn Creo. CommScope will support that transition to Creo.
  • Knowledge of fiber optic or high-speed connectivity systems (e.g., blind-mate, backplane connectors)
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes such as machining, molding, stamping, EDM, plating, and assembly
  • Experience supporting product development in a manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with FEA tools (e.g., Ansys, Workbench) for structural analysis
  • Exposure to intellectual property processes, including collaboration with legal teams on patents
  • Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping methods

Responsibilities

  • Perform 3D modeling of new product components and assemblies in Creo. Previous Creo knowledge is not required to be hired if the candidate has expertise in another CAD system. However, if hired, the candidate must learn Creo. CommScope will support that transition to Creo.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers to create design concepts for fiber optic products
  • Create and coordinate prototypes to validate design concepts
  • Generate detailed drawings and bills of materials (BOMs) in accordance with company standards and GD&T requirements
  • Manage CAD files and revisions within SAP
  • Partner with manufacturing engineers to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective, applying DFM/DFA principles
  • Build and apply knowledge of fiber optic products, industry standards, and testing methods to support development projects
