About The Position

Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we’ve designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity. The Mechanical Design Engineer will be a member of the Amazon Leo Inter-Satellite Link team, focusing on the design of the various mechanical ground support equipment, including assembly, alignment, and testing fixturing and tooling. Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Requirements

  • BS degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with prototyping and implementation
  • Experience with PCBA fabrication and electronic enclosures design
  • Experience with fiber-optic handling
  • Experience with CAD design in NX, TeamCenter
  • Experience in DFM/DFA and manufacturing process development. Applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials
  • Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Experience with production fixturing and tooling
  • U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
  • Knowledge of Ansys Finite Element analysis tool
  • 5+ years of experience with development, test, deployment of aerospace systems
  • Experience with specifying/justifying margins and test sequences, and qualifying space systems
  • Strong time and task management skills with consistent attention to detail
  • Use of engineering project management software such as JIRA, Confluence, or other Agile tools
  • Strong communication and writing skills

Responsibilities

  • Developing 3D and 2D mechanical design and related analysis specifically for manufacturing GSE for payloads satellite systems in Siemens NX.
  • Working with a team of top-notch engineers and collaborate with multiple other spacecraft design and integration teams.
  • Tackling challenging, novel situations every day and have the opportunity to work with multiple technical teams at Amazon in different locations.
  • Fixturing and tooling design, design reviews, building and qualifying.
  • Constant interaction with multiple HW/SW design teams and end-users.
  • Lead interdisciplinary discussions between Hardware, Reliability, and Firmware teams to define and drive scope and clarity of work, and reach optimum system level trade-offs.
  • Provides manufacturing decision-making information by calculating production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
