About The Position

Acme Manufacturing, a global leading machine tool builder for the Medical Device, Aerospace, and Firearms industries, is seeking a motivated Mechanical Design Engineer. The successful candidate will join a talented team of 80+ in the Auburn Hills, Michigan office and will be responsible for the innovative mechanical design of part fixtures, robotic End-Of-Arm Tooling (EOATs), and electro-mechanical devices. These designs will be used in robotic metal finishing applications. The role requires strong machine design skills and offers opportunities for exciting challenges and growth.

Requirements

  • Seasoned knowledge of design principles of machine tool design and construction
  • Advanced user of CAD software tools (preferably Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD)
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office suite of programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, percentages, ratios, and trigonometry.
  • Excellent critical thinker and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to reason and apply common sense to carry out instructions given verbally or written.
  • Ability to work well with others
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent work experience consisting of a minimum of five years of experience as a Design Engineer in the machine tool industry

Responsibilities

  • Design new heads, indexers and enclosures.
  • Design complex tooling, fixtures, and robotic end-of-arm tooling used in the aerospace, firearm, and medical industries.
  • Design production tooling and or fixtures used in the metal finishing industry.
  • Utilize engineering principles and standard engineering tools to take existing early design concepts through to production.
  • Modify designs using CAD software tools.
  • Participates in design/manufacturing reviews to resolve issues and institute improvements as opportunities arise.
  • Generate 3D solid models for geometry of fixture and tooling concepts as well as 2D detailed drawings.
  • Executes and documents design revisions and drawing releases.
  • Provide periodic updates to management (tooling status reports, projects summaries, costs, etc.)
  • Work with internal and external tool suppliers to ensure that final builds meet design and functionality intent and are produced at expected cost.
