About The Position

Forgent is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer II to lead the mechanical design and drafting of its liquid-filled transformer product line in Waco, Texas. The engineer works independently on complex and custom designs, including tanks, radiators and cooling systems, core and coil support structures, bushings, and hardware. The role owns assigned orders from concept through detailed drawings, bills of materials, documentation, and production release, and provides technical guidance to junior engineers and drafters. Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, the position combines design execution with design-for-manufacturability and collaboration across manufacturing, quality, electrical engineering, and supply chain. The engineer supports the factory floor, addresses mechanical issues arising from manufacturing, testing, or the field, and supports customer-facing engineering requests. This is an on-site position in Waco, TX, with occasional travel—approximately 5–10%—to suppliers or other Forgent facilities. The role has no direct reports. Compensation is described as a competitive base salary commensurate with experience, with an unprovided salary range, bonus eligibility, and full benefits.

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • 3–5 years of mechanical design experience, ideally in transformer, heavy electrical equipment, or power products.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical design principles for structural, thermal, and manufacturing considerations in large industrial equipment.
  • Ability to independently create and approve detailed mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Strong communication skills across manufacturing, quality, and electrical engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience designing liquid-filled power or distribution transformers, including tanks, radiators, core and coil structures, or bushings.
  • A track record of driving design-for-manufacturability or cost-reduction initiatives on the shop floor.
  • Familiarity with industry design standards and codes applicable to liquid-filled transformers.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or drafters.

  • Own assigned orders from concept through detailed drawings, bills of materials, documentation, and production release.
  • Perform and verify structural, thermal, and dimensional calculations to ensure designs meet requirements.
  • Review and approve mechanical drawings, cross-check work before release, and ensure conformance to design standards.
  • Drive design-for-manufacturability improvements to reduce cost, improve build quality, and shorten shop-floor cycle time.
  • Lead root-cause analysis and corrective action for mechanical issues identified in manufacturing, testing, or the field.
  • Provide mechanical support to the factory floor and resolve fit, dimension, and hardware issues.
  • Mentor and check the work of the Mechanical Design Engineer I and drafting staff.
  • Partner with Electrical Engineering to ensure mechanical designs support electrical performance requirements.
  • Work with Quality to resolve mechanical nonconformances and support investigations.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain on component selection, supplier drawings, and make-or-buy decisions.
  • Support customer-facing engineering requests, including drawing reviews and technical clarifications.
