About The Position

Perform a complete variety of mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair work on transit, paratransit, and support vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair gas- and/or diesel-powered vehicles and support equipment, such as transmissions, engines, suspensions, differentials, wheelchair systems, and brake systems. The incumbent will perform frequent new and varied work situations involving a high degree of complexity. Work is performed in accordance with established and well-known policies and procedures, safety practices, and laws. Individuals assigned to this classification perform proficiently and independently under the general direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor and Lead Mechanic.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of gas- and diesel-type equipment and electrical systems.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, and correct malfunctions in a timely manner.
  • Knowledge of shop techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply shop manual specifications and information.
  • Regular, dependable attendance required.
  • Must be able to work any day of the week and/or any shift, including days, swing, and graveyard.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from the state of residence and maintain a good driving record.
  • Must possess own tools in accordance with the minimum tool list requirement.
  • Must be able to comply with C-TRAN’s nonsmoking policy and work in a nonsmoking work environment.
  • Must pass an employment physical examination and drug test to be certified for the position and be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • This is a safety sensitive position subject to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.
  • Must promote and model safety within the department and agencywide through reporting and addressing safety issues, supporting safety campaigns, maintaining a safe work area, assisting in safety training documentation, and certification record keeping.
  • Documentation that you are a United States citizen, or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States will be required to establish your identity and work authorization.
  • Employment will be conditional, pending completion of a criminal background investigation.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of three years’ experience as a journey level mechanic preferred.
  • Education in a related field may be substituted for experience.
  • A commercial driver’s license will be required within a specified time frame, determined by the supervisor, to maintain this position.
  • Must obtain 609 air conditioning certification within six months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance work on transit coaches and support vehicles (gas and diesel) to include complete servicing procedures related to lubrication, fuel, cooling, wheelchair lifts, air conditioning, transmissions, fareboxes, and other transit-related systems.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair diesel and gas engines (electronically and mechanically controlled) in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. Replace defective parts such as governors, injectors, blowers, and bearings. Assemble, reinstall, and test repairs for proper performance.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair electronically controlled transmissions and heavy-duty differentials. Set up and adjust to specifications, reassemble, install, and test.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair defective or worn steering and suspension components such as wheel bearings, tie rods, springs, bushings, steering gear boxes, and other related components.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair mechanical and electrical subsystems such as multiplex systems, alternators, starters, fuel injection systems, wheelchair systems, and farebox systems. As required, disassemble unit down to components level, replace defective parts, reassemble, install, and test repaired or overhauled units.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust and repair air conditioning systems. Diagnose malfunction and repair or replace motors, compressors, and other related units.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust and repair air and hydraulic brake systems including ABS/ATC systems. Repair, install, and test as needed.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment such as wrenches, jacks, presses, steam cleaners, band saws, and lathes.
  • Work with repair work orders and parts requests.
  • Use computer system to input and extract data.
  • Make emergency repairs and road calls in the field as needed.
  • Remove and install windows and windshields of various types as needed.
  • Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned.
