About The Position

The Mechanic performs repairs, maintenance, and inspections on a variety of heavy and light construction equipment, passenger vehicles, medium-duty trucks, and small-engine equipment in Louisiana DOTD District 08, Unit 071, located in Rapides Parish. The role involves inspecting equipment, diagnosing mechanical problems, and determining appropriate repairs. It is a hands-on field position requiring attention to detail, safety awareness, and strong documentation skills. The position reports to the Mechanic Supervisor A.

Depending on assignment and qualifications, vacancies may be filled at the Mechanic 1, 2, or 3 level. The work may include entry-level repairs and maintenance, assisting higher-level mechanics, and maintaining equipment powered by small internal-combustion engines. The appointment may be probational, a promotion, or a detail to special duty.

Requirements

• One year of experience or training as a mechanic.

Responsibilities

• Perform repairs, maintenance, and inspections on vehicles and heavy construction equipment.
• Inspect equipment, diagnose mechanical problems, and determine the best course of repair.
• Assist higher-level mechanics with work on mobile equipment and vehicles.
• Repair and maintain small-engine equipment such as lawnmowers, string trimmers, and outboard motors.
• Perform tasks such as spark plug replacement, carburetor cleaning, starter repair, and filter replacement.
• Remove and clean fuel tanks.
• Maintain inventory of tools, instruments, and supplies, as assigned.
