About The Position

This role involves the maintenance and repair of the City's vehicles, heavy equipment, other rolling stock, and small equipment. The position requires performing mechanical work on various systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Responsibilities also include routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, and electrical maintenance. The role may involve manual labor for public utilities and property, building special equipment, and purchasing necessary parts. Depending on the level, there may be opportunities to operate heavy equipment and trucks for street, sewer, and water system maintenance, as well as directing the work of others and participating in training junior mechanics. Decision-making involves assisting with preventive maintenance, determining repair versus replacement costs, and developing unit-level procedures. The working environment is a shop setting with frequent exposure to hazardous situations and moderate exposure to adverse weather. It involves heavy physical exertion and may require working holidays, irregular hours, and being on call. This position is subject to the Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy if the employee has a CDL.

Requirements

  • Three years' experience in heavy mechanical work.
  • Working knowledge of repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Five years' experience in mechanical work on heavy and light duty equipment with diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Extensive knowledge in the repair of light and heavy engines, transmissions, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Extensive knowledge in welding and metal fabrication, with steel and aluminum, for building, rebuilding or repair of equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge in repair of engines, transmissions, and AC & DC electrical systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of diagnostic computers for troubleshooting operational problems.
  • Working knowledge using a metal lathe and other typical tools of the trade.
  • Experience with computerized record keeping.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite of tools.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Automotive Technology or comparable degree, or equivalent work experience and technical education/training (ten years).
  • Ten years' experience in mechanical work on heavy and light duty equipment with diesel and gasoline engines.
  • Commercial Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Welding experience desired.
  • CDL preferred, but not required.
  • Technical education/training applicable to position equivalent to two-year degree.
  • Technical education/training equivalent to a two-year degree after high school diploma or GED.
  • Working knowledge of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of heavy civil infrastructure.
  • Experience with high pressure steam boiler units.
  • Advanced training in skills or best practices applicable to the mechanic trade.
  • Working knowledge of fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment.
  • Experience fabricating customized equipment to address specialized applications.
  • Experience with municipal public works operations.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mechanical work on heavy and light equipment including gasoline and diesel engines, transmission, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Performs routine lubrication, tire repair, welding, carpentry, plumbing, electrical and other maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs mechanical work for fire, medical and rescue vehicles and their on-board equipment.
  • Performs manual labor as required in connection with construction, operation, or maintenance of all public utilities and property.
  • Builds special equipment as required.
  • Operates heavy equipment, trucks, etc., as required for street, sewer and water system maintenance.
  • Initiates Purchase Orders, purchases/receives and reviews invoices for parts, materials and other supplies required for repairs and shop operations.
  • Participates in the training/coaching of junior mechanics as well as other personnel assigned to help with equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Assists the Lead Mechanic in developing policies and procedures at unit level.
  • May be temporarily assigned as Lead Mechanic or to direct and organize the work of others assigned for special projects.
