Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Formal training in hydraulics, pneumatics, air conditioning, automotive electrical systems, or related training is required. Exceptional experience may be considered in lieu of formal training requirement.
  • Four years trade-related mechanical experience is required.
  • Experience in major overhaul/rebuild of gas and diesel engine and automatic transmissions required.
  • Arc and acetylene welding experience required.
  • Relevant military mechanical/operational training and/or experience may be substituted for fleet experience.
  • Must have a valid Missouri CDL, Class A including air brakes, hazardous material, tanker, and passenger endorsements, OR: a. The ability to obtain a Missouri Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) within six weeks of employment AND b. The ability to obtain a CDL, Class A including air brakes, hazardous material, tanker, and passenger endorsements within six months of employment.
  • Knowledge in the diagnosis and repair of computerized fleet assets and equipment control systems.
  • Required to stay current with new technology to perform related job duties.
  • Ability to service, repair, maintain, fuel, wash, and grease vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to work on all types of brake, fuel, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and air conditioning systems including all related system components.
  • Ability to run special diagnostic testing, repairing, and scanning equipment, along with special machine shop equipment used to rebuild components of each area mentioned above.
  • Effectively utilize a range of digital tools and platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, enterprise software, artificial intelligence-enhanced applications, and self-service systems.
  • Must possess a willingness and capacity to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including mobile devices, cloud-based systems, and data-driven platforms relevant to utility operations.
  • Be familiar with computer controlled and electronic fuel systems found on vehicles.
  • Maintain adherence to all company policies.
  • Must have full body mobility including adequate upper and lower body strength to assist, stabilize, and push or pull, and strength to climb into and onto equipment with ability to support full body weight to guard against falling.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted, with much greater weights being lifted with assistance from other employees or mechanical lifts.
  • Must be able to work within the rated capacity of the utility’s aerial lifts, ladders, fall restraint devices and/or other job-related equipment.
  • Requires walking, bending over, reaching, stooping, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling, climbing into and onto equipment, working on uneven surfaces, walking and working on wet surfaces and surfaces with debris.
  • Requires repeated use of hand and power tools, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and twisting while holding the tools.
  • Subject to Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
  • Required to wear uniform clothing provided by City Utilities.
  • Employees must remain alert and aware of their surroundings at all times and maintain the ability to respond to changing circumstances in a timely manner.
  • Must be able to work successfully with diverse groups of people.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE Certification preferred.
  • Must have ASE Air Conditioning Certification or be able to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Must have Missouri State Inspector Mechanic Permit or be able to obtain within six months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Replaces and adjusts fuel, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and cooling system components found on a variety of fleet assets and equipment.
  • Overhauls component parts and systems of vehicles and equipment. Performs arc and acetylene welding on various pieces of equipment.
  • Installs, adjusts, and repairs automatic transmissions. Inspects, repairs, and maintains functional parts of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Works with computerized testing equipment.
  • Records labor using computerized fleet management system.
  • Utilizes computerized fueling system.
  • Operates wrecker and related towing tasks involving all types of fleet assets and equipment.
  • Responsible for providing and maintaining hand tools as required by management.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
