About The Position

Xcel Energy is seeking one or more Mechanic Technician Apprentice(s)/Journeyman for their Hydro Maintenance Building in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. This role involves determining safe methods and practices for repairing power plant equipment, applying in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems, rigging, scaffolding, and general hand tools. The position performs corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance on mechanical power plant equipment such as hydro turbines & generators, pumps, water treating equipment, tainter gates, and governors. Responsibilities include interpreting mechanical drawings, using precision measuring equipment, maintaining inventory of plant tools and spare parts, and tracking maintenance through the CMMS program. The role requires adherence to D.O.T. regulations for drug and alcohol testing and may involve travel and working away from home.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • 1 year of experience as a maintenance mechanic in an industrial setting environment and/or military experience
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, specifically MS Word and MS Excel, and CMMS systems
  • Meet driver qualification requirements as specified in FMCSR parts 382 and 391
  • Obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A within the first 6 months of hire
  • Subject to D.O.T. random drug and alcohol testing program
  • Willingness to travel and work away from home
  • Must reside within a 20-mile radius of assigned Hydro Maintenance Building within the first 6 months of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in mechanical trades or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Machine Tooling Techniques Technical Diploma or other Machinist skills diploma, certificate or degree
  • Power Plant experience
  • Hydro Plant experience
  • Experience with crane operation and/or rigging
  • Machinist experience - large and small jobs

Responsibilities

  • Determines safe methods and practices of repairing power plant equipment.
  • Applies in-depth knowledge of power generating facility mechanical systems, rigging and lifting, scaffolding, and general hand tools.
  • Performs corrective, preventive and predictive maintenance on mechanical power plant equipment such as hydro turbines & generators, pumps, water treating equipment, tainter gates, and governors, in accordance with OEM Technical Manuals.
  • Procures materials and services to support on-going maintenance activities at all facilities.
  • Interprets mechanical drawings.
  • Proficient in the use of precision measuring equipment.
  • Maintains inventory of plant tools and spare parts.
  • Tracks all corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance through the facility CMMS program.
