About The Position

Under general supervision, supervises assigned subordinates and performs difficult mechanical work in repairing and maintaining automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, heavy field equipment, and transit buses; ensures quality control. FLSA Exemption Status: Non-exempt

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED supplemented by advanced specialized training in the field of work
  • Five (5) years related work experience
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Knowledge of methods, practices, and procedures in repairing, overhauling, and maintaining gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel, and hybrid automobiles, trucks, and complex heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of routine administrative practices and procedures
  • Skill in directing a progressive program of vehicle preventive maintenance
  • Skill in operating complex diagnostic and test equipment and utilize data to determine mechanical defects
  • Ability to direct the work of others
  • Ability to oversee and inspect the work of subordinate mechanic personnel
  • Ability to lay out, plan, and perform repair tasks of a relatively difficult and complex nature
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and vendors
  • Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification or the ability to obtain within one year of employment
  • N.C. Vehicle Inspector Certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment

Responsibilities

  • Supervises mechanics, auto service worker, and other assigned personnel
  • Opens and assigns work orders
  • Performs highly specialized automotive repair work including rebuilding transmissions and other complex components and assemblies
  • Supervises the repair duties of subordinate repair personnel
  • Performs complex mechanical work in repairing and overhauling chassis units, including engines, brake systems, radiators, and other systems
  • Directs and leads a preventive maintenance program for City vehicles and motorized equipment
  • Operates complex diagnostic and test equipment in detecting mechanical defects in automotive equipment
  • Performs or supervises difficult welding functions
  • Expedites shop work orders and performs routine administrative duties to ensure that applicable costs factors are allocated properly
  • Completes reports on repair functions
  • Conducts road tests on completed repair work
  • Determines repair or replacement of defective units or related parts
  • Serves as Fleet Superintendent in his/her absence
  • Conducts state required inspections
  • Performs quality control checks and inspections
  • Tracks and maintains recalls
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
