About The Position

This position works in direct liaison with the Tropic Ocean Airways Director of Maintenance (DOM) and other leadership, accomplishing and leading maintenance actions in accordance with company policies and FAA regulations. The role conducts all maintenance actions, modifications, and/or changes required by flight operations following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) with timely delivery. The focus is on individual training and mentoring of subordinate technicians to help develop the next generation of maintenance department talent. This role ensures quality work, safety, and reliability of their assigned crew and shift with an emphasis on judicious use of personnel, equipment and supplies. In addition to technical leadership responsibilities, this role serves as the direct first-line supervisor for assigned maintenance personnel. This role is responsible for employee development, performance management, workforce planning, and supporting the Company's hiring, disciplinary, and employment decision-making processes.

Requirements

  • Airframe and powerplant (A&P) license from FAA
  • 5+ years’ experience in a FAA Part 91, Part 121, Part 125, Part 135, or Part 145 maintenance environment or military aviation maintenance environment
  • Strong honesty, integrity, adherence to ethical actions, and respect for teammates
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize tasks and balance multiple responsibilities
  • Effective spoken and written communicator, with ability to be clearly understood by subordinates, supervisors, and external personnel
  • Experience with modern avionics systems (e.g., Garmin G1000, Collins ProLine 21, other glass cockpit systems)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior supervisory or team leadership experience in an aviation maintenance environment
  • Demonstrated experience conducting employee coaching, performance management, and disciplinary discussions
  • Knowledge of employment practices, workplace investigations, and personnel management principles

Responsibilities

  • Meet or exceed duties/expectations displaying initiative, adhering to TOA SOPs, FAA regulations, and aligning with core values of the organization.
  • Direct crew in performing maintenance actions to TOA and FAA standards.
  • Actively lead or perform aircraft maintenance when required to support the development of subordinates and ensure the timely completion of daily assignments of the crew.
  • Assist DOM and other maintenance leadership by performing final inspection(s) and approval for return-to-service of aircraft after departmental maintenance action.
  • Act as the on-shift Quality Assurance (QC) designee, ensuring the buy-back of critical components or processes of both RII and non-license technician work.
  • Have oversight responsibilities of their assigned crew for the proper utilization, completeness and accuracy of company documents, logbooks and data entered in electronic maintenance tracking systems.
  • Ensure the proper utilization of electronic Inventory Management System by their assigned crew, thus ensuring parts are available for the timely completion of aircraft bill-of-works (BOW) and timely return-to-service of aircraft.
  • Prepare accurate daily turnovers and reports of other statistical data as requested by leadership.
  • Assist DOM with the timely completion of all Company assigned training task(s) or other administrative requirements of their assigned crew by the prescribed deadlines.
  • Conduct daily crew meetings at the start of each shift to communicate company information, daily expectations, goals, and individual work assignments.
  • Focus on and report on opportunities to utilize the principles of Continuous Improvement to improve the maintenance department and its personnel.
  • Monitor subordinate(s) technical performance and make recommendations for future department or individual training opportunities.
  • Conduct and document employee performance evaluations, probationary reviews, and ongoing performance discussions for assigned personnel. Provide recommendations regarding employee development, promotion, disciplinary action, and retention.
  • Demonstrate keen communication skills to provide excellence in customer service both internally and externally.
  • Responsible for end-of-shift clean-up and security of hangar operations by ensuring all company equipment and tools are returned to their assigned storage location, air hoses and power cords are rolled up and properly stored, work areas are clean of debris, old parts and any liquids residue on the floor are properly cleaned, trash cans are emptied, and discarded boxes are thrown in the dumpers, and fans, lights, compressors, hangar doors and other electrical devices are turned off or unplugged at the end of shift.
  • Assist leadership in the upkeep of the office, hangar, and surrounding facilities. Report any cleaning, repairs, and upkeep required of the physical structure (e.g., doors, lighting, plumbing, electrical systems).
  • Ensure all equipment, tools, and supplies needed by their crew are available, functional, and properly stored at the end of shift.
  • Ensure the proper utilization and operation of ground support equipment such as tow bars, tugs, and other machinery used in the hangar by their crew. Report any defects or out-of-service equipment to leadership and ensure their crew do not utilize such equipment until it is properly repaired and returned to service.
  • Manage the available space within the hangar to optimize aircraft storage, maintenance, and operational activities.
  • Communicate with Operations on the efficient movements and parking of aircraft in support of the flight schedule. Ensuring aircraft are staged in a manner to facilitate timely movement to the gate or ready line.
  • Implement and enforce safety policies and procedures by conducting daily safety observations, thus ensuring the safety of personnel, aircraft, and equipment in the hangar.
  • Oversee fire safety, emergency procedures, and hazardous material handling and disposal of their assigned shift.
  • Ensure that all hangar operations comply with local, state, and federal aviation regulations, including OSHA, and EPA standards.
  • Ensure that the hangar adheres to environmental regulations related to fuel storage, waste disposal, and hazardous materials handling.
  • Manage access to the hangar to ensure that only authorized personnel are allowed entry. Coordinate with security personnel, by using access control systems, and enforcing security protocols.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection process for maintenance personnel, including candidate screening, interviewing, and hiring recommendations.
  • Assist the Director of Maintenance and Human Resources with onboarding and integration of newly hired employees.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching, mentoring, and development of assigned maintenance personnel.
  • Conduct and document employee performance evaluations and provide regular performance feedback.
  • Identify employee performance deficiencies and administer coaching, corrective action, and counseling in accordance with Company policies.
  • Recommend employee recognition, promotions, transfers, training opportunities, and compensation adjustments based on performance and business needs.
  • Participate in investigations involving employee conduct, safety concerns, policy violations, and workplace incidents.
  • Provide recommendations regarding disciplinary actions up to and including suspension and termination of employment.
  • Participate in termination meetings and offboarding activities when requested by Company leadership or Human Resources.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor staffing levels and communicate manpower requirements, scheduling concerns, and succession planning needs to maintenance leadership.
  • Directly supervises assigned maintenance technicians and support personnel during designated shifts.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Company policies and applicable employment laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, coaching employees, addressing complaints, resolving personnel issues, recommending disciplinary action, and participating in hiring and termination decisions.
