The Maintenance Mechanic I helps keep equipment in a regional distribution center fully operational. This role has specialist knowledge and complex repair capability in one of the areas of conveyors, rolling stock, or building, along with general knowledge and basic repair capability in the other two. The mechanic applies electrical and mechanical knowledge to safely and independently diagnose equipment issues, determine and plan repairs, prioritize work, obtain appropriate spare parts, and complete repairs. The role can mentor a Maintenance Utility and seeks assistance from a Maintenance Mechanic II or Maintenance Supervisor when needed. The mechanic maintains any required certifications, observes safety requirements, prepares worksites and performs lockout/tagout, gathers tools and parts, and uses tools and personal protective equipment safely. The role evaluates equipment condition, identifies needed repairs and potential future failures, executes work, restores the worksite, returns unused parts, and documents equipment condition, repairs, and parts used. It also enters information into the 7I computerized maintenance management system, closes work orders and preventive maintenance requests, and communicates incomplete work to the next shift and maintenance customers. The position attends scheduled training and develops expertise in its specialty area while building working knowledge of other maintenance systems. These systems include conveyors, controls and subsystems; industrial electrical systems; HVAC; fire suppression; welding and fabrication; plumbing and carpentry; forklifts and material-handling equipment; and preventive-maintenance technologies. Additional duties may be assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, including training Maintenance Utility associates and helping change equipment batteries.
