About The Position

Direct and coordinate maintenance personnel and vendors to safely accomplish repairs and upgrades on a fleet of tugs and barges. This includes management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials, proper utilization of resources and strategic planning that lends itself to absolute minimum downtime of company equipment. Associated skills required are the ability to perform accurate diagnostic evaluations and service/repair tasks. A high level of cost sensitivity and professionalism is required, as the position will occasionally require serving as the owners' representative. Safe operation of yard equipment and machinery is essential.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of the operation and maintenance of marine and industrial diesel engines.
  • Ability to repair and operate a wide variety of equipment, including engines, winches, motors, and transmissions.
  • Basic diagnostic and repair skills for marine subsystems (hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and fuel systems).
  • Proficiency in the safe use of hand and power tools.
  • Basic welding skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Working knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems.
  • High School Education or equivalent education required.
  • A minimum of six years in all phases of marine maintenance is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with electronic engine diagnostic tools is preferred.
  • Willingness to work extended hours as needed to safely complete projects.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, prioritize, and oversee preventative maintenance and repair work to vessels and equipment.
  • Assign tasks based on mechanical skill level and operational urgency.
  • Oversee, mentor, and develop Mechanics in their daily work.
  • Provides technical direction and support.
  • Maintain yard and shop equipment in accordance with company policies and regulatory standards.
  • Adhere to and enforce Foss safety standards. Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all Mechanics consistently follow safety protocols.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of all environmentally sensitive materials in compliance with regulations.
  • Support the Port Engineer with vessel and equipment status updates, drydock and out-of-service time planning (including budgeting) and equipment failure investigations and analysis.
  • Ensure effective preventative maintenance and repairs to vessels and equipment.
  • Assists in diagnostic evaluations of machinery.
  • Supervises and assist vendors in overhauls of propulsion, auxiliary engines, and drives.
  • Identify maintenance issues and initiate a plan of repair.
  • Manage and oversee repairs at external shipyards.
  • Supports vessel purchases, charters and modifications.
  • Oversee warehouse operations, inventory management, and procurement of equipment and parts.
  • Coordinate facility maintenance and vehicle management.
  • Provide logistical support for parts and materials as needed.
