About The Position

The Mechanical Technician G 3 (Outside Machine Operator) operates light-duty bench- or floor-type machine tools and equipment, including small lathes, power mills, extruding machines, drills or punch presses, power brakes, shears, and saws. The role may include setting up machines, making adjustments, and performing machine maintenance. The operator checks work with prescribed gauges, jigs, and fixtures to measure close tolerances. Some machines may be numerically controlled. The role may also involve monitoring and verifying quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures. This position is with Newport News Shipbuilding and requires U.S. citizenship. It is full-time, does not offer relocation assistance, and is not eligible for telework. Candidates must be able to work the assigned shift as production needs.

Requirements

U.S. citizenship is required for this position.
High school diploma or equivalent and 5 years of additional education and/or related experience; alternatively, apprentice graduate or associate degree in a relevant discipline and 3 years of related experience.
May require certification.
Ability to climb ladders and work at extreme heights.
Ability to work in small, tight, or confined spaces.
Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis.
Ability to lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more.
Ability to work while repeatedly reaching overhead.
Ability to work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions.
Ability to take and pass a respirator fit test.
Ability to work the assigned shift as production needs.
