Meat Department Managers order, receive, cut and process, store, display, price, and account for meat products purchased for resale. The manager directs department activities and provides administrative and technical supervision to meatcutters, meat-cutting workers, and other personnel. The role includes forecasting product demand, maintaining product availability and presentation, using the DeCA automated cutting test program for pricing and inventory tasks, and designing or resetting promotional and seasonal displays. The manager ensures meat products are properly trimmed, sorted, cut, packaged, rotated, priced, and displayed, and that adequate supplies of processed and vendor-packaged meats are available to meet customer demand. The manager also maintains sanitary and orderly processing areas, display cases, and storage rooms in accordance with current sanitation and safety regulations; inspects equipment and initiates maintenance; and ensures safe practices when employees use power tools, knives, grinding equipment, and other equipment. Most work takes place in the well-lit store display area, which is maintained at a comfortable temperature. The position may involve exposure to unusually cold temperatures in receiving, storage, and processing areas, including refrigerated rooms. There is a risk of injury from electric meat-processing equipment, lifting heavy products, and slipping on wet floors. The role requires lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and handling products weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance and occasionally heavier items with assistance, as well as standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, and climbing for prolonged periods. Occasional overtime may be required.
