About The Position

Breakthrough New York is hiring a seasonal, part-time Math After School Instructor for its Middle School program in New York City. The instructor will work with the Program Manager, other instructors, tutors, and students to prepare for and deliver after-school programming at an assigned site in Queens or Manhattan. The role includes delivering pre-written Algebra curriculum to middle school students twice weekly, supporting program logistics, monitoring student needs and progress, and participating in professional development and evaluations. The Spring 2027 appointment runs from January 13, 2027, through April 21, 2027; continuation into the Fall semester is not guaranteed and would be under a separate contract. The position pays $20 per hour.

Requirements

Demonstrated experience and results with responsibilities similar to those listed.
Passion for forming relationships with middle school students and acting as a role model.
Must be a current college student and/or at least 18 years old.
Ability to commit to the Spring 2027 term (January 27 through April 21).
Confidence using Zoom and Google Drive, and comfort learning new systems.
Demonstrated excellence in Breakthrough New York’s Core Values.

Responsibilities

Deliver pre-written Math (Algebra) curriculum to middle school students twice weekly.
Support program logistics and fill in when needed.
Learn and practice student management techniques and communicate student needs to the Program Manager.
Participate in weekly check-ins with the Program Manager for professional development and mid-semester and end-of-semester evaluations.
Evaluate student work and track student performance.
Complete training and observation sessions.
Perform other duties based on the assigned BTNY site.
Provide onsite teaching support on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. during the academic semester.
Attend in-person instructor training on January 13 and 14, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Attend additional virtual training sessions if scheduled.
