About The Position

The Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) is seeking a Materials Test Engineer (ES2) to support the NASA EM22 Materials Test, Chemistry & Contamination Control Branch. This full-time position involves performing mechanical material testing under the guidance of senior engineers and scientists. The role requires developing test plans, designing specimens and fixtures, operating test machines, analyzing data, and generating reports. Testing will occur in various environments and with different materials including composites, polymers, plastics, rubber, and concrete. The position is located at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a BS degree from an ABET accredited institution in Materials, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-5 years of experience preferred.
  • Experience operating in a mechanical materials test lab.
  • Experience with Solid Edge CAD software.
  • Experience with MTS and Instron material test system operation and test method development.
  • Well-versed with ASTM standards.

Responsibilities

  • Performs work under the guidance of a senior engineer/scientist.
  • Performs assignments designed to develop professional working knowledge and abilities requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out mechanical material testing.
  • May be assisted by technicians, and others who perform material testing.
  • As development progresses and where appropriate, routine assignments may be performed independently and results reviewed for accuracy.
  • For non-routine work or to resolve difficult problems, the supervisor provides techniques and procedures to be applied.
  • Most of the material testing will be in room temperature air, but some testing will be in other environments including elevated temperature and liquid nitrogen.
  • Materials to test include composite, polymers, plastics, rubber, and concrete.
  • Participating in customer meetings.
  • Developing test plans, test methods and schedules.
  • Designing test specimens, and fixtures.
  • Operating electromechanical and servo-hydraulic test machines to perform mechanical materials tests according to ASTM and NASA standards.
  • Analyzing materials test data.
  • Generate material test data reports.
