About The Position

Boom is building jet engines using high-temperature superalloys, and the materials lab is critical for generating data on alloy selection, heat treat verification, allowables, and failure analysis. This role involves establishing a new materials lab from the ground up, including mechanical testing (tensile, LCF, HCF, creep, high-temperature), metallography, and SEM. The engineer will work with world-class material scientists and engineers to develop supersonic jet engines. This is an opportunity to spec equipment, hire lab technicians, define lab processes, select and commission test frames, write procedures, run tests, reduce data, and collaborate with design engineers. The role offers hands-on experience with real engine parts and the chance to contribute to aviation history.

Requirements

  • A degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with hands-on real-world experience and/or lab-focused research.
  • Genuine hands-on testing experience, including specimen gripping, load train alignment, extensometer mounting, and performing tests.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical testing fundamentals and relevant ASTM standards, or the ability to quickly learn them.
  • Data skills including software automation and scripting for repeatable analysis, and an understanding of traceability.
  • Sufficient metallurgy knowledge to connect microstructure to properties, with a curiosity to explore superalloys.
  • Strong documentation habits suitable for audits.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain necessary U.S. Department of State authorizations due to ITAR/EAR regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Fatigue (LCF/HCF) or creep testing experience, especially at elevated temperatures.
  • Experience with nickel superalloys, titanium, or other aerospace alloys.
  • Metallography and SEM/fractography experience.
  • Exposure to allowables programs, MMPDS/CMH-17 concepts, or statistical treatment of material data.
  • Experience commissioning lab equipment or establishing new test capabilities.
  • Experience in an R&D, test lab, or startup-pace environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute mechanical test campaigns on aerospace alloys: tensile (room and elevated temperature), LCF/HCF fatigue, and creep/stress rupture.
  • Collaborate with lab technicians and senior M&P engineers on all aspects of testing and documentation.
  • Write and validate lab test procedures against ASTM standards, and continuously improve them.
  • Develop the data backbone, including specimen tracking, test logs, raw data pipelines, and reduction scripts.
  • Support metallographic evaluation and SEM inspection, including microstructure verification, fractography, and failure analysis on engine hardware.
  • Support allowables-style test programs, including test matrices, traceability, and statistical treatment of material property data.
  • Assist in commissioning new lab equipment and establishing new test capabilities.
  • Support NCR and root cause investigations using a disciplined, documented methodology.
